Katie’s dad

Although Katie Daffan would become famous for her literary and political accomplishments, her father was well known before her. Col. Lawrence A. Daffan, superintendent of the Houston and Texas Central Railway for 19 years, died in 1907. He was “stricken,” as the papers reported, possibly with a heart attack, while at his office and he was taken home where he passed away.

A decade before the Depression we have heard so much about, there was a brief economic slump. It happened in 1921, and Ennis, like many cities, was hit. The Ennis National Bank didn’t open its doors on Nov. 14 and “according to a statement issued by the directors, will remain closed for about 10 days while reorganization is in progress.”

In 1950 fire damaged the Ennis Municipal Hospital, a three-story brick building on Lampases St., designed by Hix McCanless, Ennis’ foremost architect and at one point city engineer. The fire began in an electric motor on the roof of the hospital. A report in the Dallas Morning News stated that most of the damage was caused by water from firehoses used to extinguish the blaze.

Oak Timber Senior Apartments Christmas Fundraiser

Volunteers with Oak Timbers Senior Apartments are raising funds to provide holiday gifts and decor this year for their residents’ common areas. Citizens can purchase raffle tickets at $2 each or simply donate to the cause. Tickets must be bought by Sept. 21 at Oak Timbers, 1600 W. Lake Bardwell, Ennis. The raffle, which includes great prizes, is scheduled for Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. For more information, call 214-399-1031.

Sports weren’t integrated in 1931 but that didn’t stop a local team, the Ennis Colored Eagles, from establishing a stellar reputation. The team’s games were often featured in the Ennis Daily News as well as in Dallas papers. Coached by C.C. Stevenson, a Christmas Day battle with the Terrell Colored Tigers gave the so-called “Negro Eleven” a pounding 54-7 win. The Eagles’ star at the time was a player with the last name of Steed, a 230-lb fullback who made a 90-yard run, three 50-yard runs and a 40-yard jaunt during the game.

SB I-20 at US 175 to EB US 175 Ramp to Close for a Month

Weather permitting, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will temporarily close the ramp at southbound Interstate 20 (I-20) at US 175 to eastbound US 175, beginning Monday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. It is expected to reopen by Friday, Oct. 16 at 5 a.m. Detours will be in place.

Crews will strip and resurface the bridge deck during the month-long closure.
