Ennis Christian Ministers Association to host Golden Sweetheart Banquet

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, the Ennis Christian Ministers Association will treat couples that have been married over 50 years to a special banquet in honor of their longevity together. The Golden Sweetheart Banquet will be held at the First United Methodist Church located at 300 N Sherman on Tuesday, February 11 beginning at 5:30 p.m. A great meal will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Ennis Chamber hosts county candidates, Monday

Count on the Ennis Chamber of Commerce to make available the Ellis County candidates currently running for office at a Meet & Greet that will be open for area residents. It is set for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, at the Chamber of Commerce. It is located next to the Quality Inn, Denny’s and Whataburger along the service road on southbound I-45.

Bardwell water flow impeded

Residents of nearby Bardwell, Texas (pop. 720) continued to be without water or have had very low water pressure since the issue first arose on Sunday morning. It has continued into Tuesday afternoon.

Calls to Rural Bardwell Water Supply Corporation provided no information or an estimated time of completion other than to say, “we’re working on it.” The system, which serves 235 rural homes, has one part-time employee and uses three other day laborers as needed.

City appoints Harvey new Chief of Police

Interim City Manager David Willard said, “I am proud to announce the appointment of Andy Harvey as the permanent police chief. Chief Harvey brings tons of experience and will lead the department to the next level.”

With that, the City of Ennis has a new Chief of Police. Harvey has been leading the police department since the retirement of John Erisman in November of 2019. At the same time, Willard announced that Economic Development Director, Marty Nelson, would be elevated to Assistant City Manager.

Local family remembers Iwo Jima

HISTORY

This month marks the 75th anniversary of the start of World War II’s Battle of Iwo Jima, shortly after which four Ennis men lost their lives. Dooney Pierce, Joe Crow, Airdale Goodwin and Jack Lummus were among the Marines and Navy men who stormed the island and were felled within days of one another in February and March 1945. The conflict on Iwo Jima would go on for 37 days, during which time some 5,931 Americans and 19,800 Japanese were killed.
