Locals learn new Cotton Bowl rules

As schools across Texas schedule “Fair Days,” such as the one Ennis ISD approved for students on Monday, parents, guardians and other visitors are learning of new rules being enforced at the State Fair of Texas’ Cotton Bowl Stadium, where games, concerts and exhibits have been held since the 1930s.

Friday night the Ennis Lions will play a football game 110 miles away in Sulphur Springs. The host Wildcats haven’t had much to cheer for this season, winning for just the first time last Friday at Forney.

Their fans, however, have a heartfelt reason to rally this week, and it is impacting residents in Ennis.

Two women who had been at that game, both from the Sulphur Springs community, were tragically killed on the way back as a result of a head-on-collision. They were also sisters.

SH 34 widening near Kaufman

ROAD WORK

Texas Department of Transportation has begun a broadening project along State Highway 34, south of Kaufman and beyond Scurry-Rosser.

In the wake of increasing residential and commercial development between Ennis and Greenville, Tx-DOT has considered widening SH 34 to four-lanes to widening the shoulders. According to Kaufman City Manager Michael Slye, the two-lane road will be widened with 10-foot shoulders on both sides.

‘Young Frankenstein’ a monstrous hit

The Mel Brooks musical Young Frankenstein packed them in this weekend when the famous comedy-turnedmusical made its debut at the Ennis Public Theatre, 113 N. Dallas. In fact, as EPT managing director Brianna Roberts has alerted fans on Facebook, opening weekend was sold out.

“If you want to see this show, you better get your tickets now!” she said.

After nearly two years of construction and amid weather delays, GAF’s new 250,000 squarefoot warehouse was opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday. City and GAF dignitaries were on hand to celebrate the opening of the warehouse.

Red Oak police make arrest in domestic dispute

Red Oak Police Department personnel were dispatched to the 200 block of Brook Court (west of I-35 near Oak Leaf) in regard to a disturbance involving a weapon and a dispute between a husband and a wife.

The husband allegedly changed the locks on the residence, which prevented the wife from gaining access to her residence. The wife requested a locksmith come to the residence to help her gain access to the home.

The railroad and cotton industries put Ennis on the map but a landmark baseball game that took place here in 1902 sure helped out, drawing national attention and remaining for many years a source of civic pride.

Anglin for a Ford

A new car dealership opened in Ennis in 1963. R. B. Anglin Ford Sales opened its doors at 218 W. Ennis Ave. and advertised that its brand new Fords were available for as low as $1,777.58.
