Palmer, Italy picked to win district

Four of five area football teams kicked-off their regular seasons on Friday, Aug. 28, with games against teams outside of their district.

Class 4A Ferris has six mild non-league contests, which could propel them over Glen Rose and Godley, each with much tougher early schedules. Glen Rose has won the district crown the past four years.

SAGU names new women’s hoops coach

Nearly three months after the sudden resignation of Head Coach Tiffany Phillips, Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) announced on Aug. 23 the hiring of Michael Sons to lead the women’s basketball team.

Sons has enjoyed a successful coaching career primarily in high school and in the AAU.

The Lady Lions compete in the 12-team Sooner Athletic Conference which is a Division I member of the NAIA.

Warde airs Monday on KBEC

Ennis News Managing Editor Mark Warde has been invited by Tater Beard to appear on Monday night’s Aug. 24 Sports Roundtable on the radio at 6 p.m. with Travis Smith.

The one-hour broadcast will be on KBEC at 1390 AM or 99.1 FM on the dial. Beard, the director of the program, said it will be a preview of all Ellis County high school football teams.

Warde covers Ennis, Ferris, Palmer, Avalon and Italy.

The program is scheduled from 6-7 p.m. KBEC is based in Waxahachie and is known for its Classic Texas Music and Sports.

Rankin sizzles in Ferris scrimmage

All four of the local teams who have begun practicing for the Aug. 28 start to their seasons, saw action on Thursday in controlled scrimmages. Two squads, Ferris and Italy, were at home, while Palmer was at Venus and Avalon visited Morgan. Both the Yellowjackets and Gladiators showed glimpses of power and quick-striking offenses. Ennis, meanwhile, doesn’t report to camp until Sept. 8.

Four of the five teams in District 5-4A will play their way into the post-season, in fact, just one win in their four league games may be enough to extend their season. The race to get there, however, could be tougher than expected.

Glen Rose (7-6) started the year 0-5 before rebounding to win the district, then rolled to a pair of playoff wins before falling to Iowa Park, 57- 27. Godley (8-3) was second in the district, losing only to the Tigers. Hillsboro (4-7) took third, yielding to the top two teams, but defeated Ferris (2-9) and Venus (1-9).

No Dallas Cheerleaders on the field

The NFL has announced that it is not allowing cheerleaders and mascots on the field during the 2020 football season. Due the coronavirus pandemic teams are being allowed to set their own policies when it comes to fan attendance. According to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero, the protocols for the NFL and NFL Players Association have been changed and the updated rules have been sent to the clubs. Not only cheerleaders and mascots, but also sideline sports, news, and pregame reporters will also not be allowed on the field level during games.

Barring any last minute wrenches thrown into the engine, Texas High School football is on the verge of starting with pre-season scrimmages this Thursday, Aug. 20, when four area teams have scheduled action with other teams. Class 5A and 6A schools, including Ennis, don’t begin practicing until Labor Day, Sept. 7. Their scrimmages get underway a few weeks later.
