Alvarez builds Cuero staff, signs Santos

New Cuero Head Coach Jack Alvarez hit the ground in South Texas like Fred Flintstone, feet peddling and plenty of Yabba-Dabba and Doo. The former 2014 state champion coach at Ennis, Alvarez had back-to-back teams produce 14-1 and 14-2 seasons.

During the first, his starting defensive tackle was 275-pound Isaiah Santos. The stout muscle-man went on to graduate at McMurry University in Abilene where he was a cog in the wheel for the WarHawks D-line.

Yrlas heading to Hill College

Ennis shortstop Kenedee Yrlas signed a scholarship to attend and play softball at Hill College. She has a solid glove, arm and range and occasional power at the plate.

Lion Nation season ticket sales note

Among the many spinning plates under the control and balance of Athletic Director Don Drake is football season ticket sales. Normally a hot commodity this time of year, the uncertainty due to COVID-19 has prevented the selling of admission to see the No. 1 ranked Lions.

“They have not gone on sale yet,” Drake explained. “We have been waiting to see what stadium capacities will be allowed (social distancing) in order to make the best decision regarding ticket sales.” Count on access to be in high demand.

Palmer and Ennis racked up the best two squads, Palmer permitting just 12.6 points per game and five of their foes netted 13 or below.
