Spring football could start Aug. 15 for Lions

Ennis and high school teams in Class 5A and 6A were expecting to start spring football in April and conclude sometime in May, though the University Interscholastic League has not determined if a change in plans will be needed.

Classes are set to resume on Monday, April 20, Original plans were for the Lions look to hold their first practice on Wednesday, Apr. 15, according to Head Coach Sam Harrell.

Ferris rounds-up four All-District First Teamers

Ferris likely had the most success of any of the Big 5 area teams in terms of basketball, with the boys varsity going 23-11 and the girls rolling to a 19- 14 mark. Believe it or not, the Jackets finished fifth while the Lady Stingers were second only to Midlothian Heritage (26-12).

In what was a mix of fortunes, both the boys and girls basketball teams at Palmer had losing regular seasons, though each had their share of happy endings.

HC Ryan Fortenberry had late-arrivers from football that led to a 6-14 start. The Bulldogs rallied to go 8-6 in District 18-3A and 14-17 overall. After a 56-50 playoff win over Keene (16-10), they fell to No. 2 ranked Crockett. The campaign was good enough to produce three All-District performers, two of them on the First Team.

All-District hoops honors for Big 5 players

All-District honors began to roll out over the past week, though they typically aren’t announced until every team in each district has been eliminated from post-season play. With the UIL canceling the boys state tournament, the impact on the process has been ongoing. Since schools are on an extended break, access to information has been strained.

The Ennis News has yet to receive any soccer information, final records, individual statistics or all-district honors. Basketball has begun to materialize.
