A day after a come-from-behind 10-5 win at Corsicana, the Ennis softball team again fell behind early but had no rally magic at home against Red Oak in a 6-2 defeat.

Tuesday’s debut, played at the friendly confines of home after 21 road games, didn’t go well at all. The Lady Lions, 13-9 in all games and 1-1 in District 14-5A, surrendered three runs in the first, another in the second, and never recovered.

After they scored twice in the third, they threatened only one more time. Trailing 4-2 with one out and two runners on base, the Lady Lions hit into a double play.

Coaches usually excel at circling the wagons, at building a sense of community and casting vision. Assembling a staff who do similarly is critical. The ability to lead players to buy into whatever the coach is selling is paramount.

Those are strengths new Burleson High School football HC Jon Kitna has in abundance. His knowledge of the game is considered a known commodity.

Third year HC Craig Horn has guided Italy from fourth to third and last fall to a second place finish in the district. Making the next step is the goal, and a solid returning cast is expected back, but expect a challenge from newcomer Dawson. They were moved up by the UIL from Division II to Italy’s District 8-2A in Div. I.

The Olde Gold, 8-4 in 2019, are primed as a contender and are likely the favorite in the new six-team district. Four of their five league games are against teams with losing records.

Drew Medford Memorial highlights a life and his game

Twenty varsity baseball teams, including Ennis, will take part in the fourth annual Drew Medford Memorial Tournament in Fort Worth this Thursday through Saturday. The tourney is to honor the life of former University Little League alum, and a player at both Paschal H.S. and TCU, Drew Medford.

SAGU alum, CJ Collins signs with XFL

Former SAGU quarterback CJ Collins was signed by the XFL’s DC Defenders last week. The 6’5, 225-lb player had previously been invited to rookie mini-camp with Green Bay in 2018. He was cut by the team, who cited their depth at the position at the time.

The Ambush Sports Network, who covers the XFL, reported Collins joins Cardale Jones, of Ohio State, and Tyree Jackson, of the University of Buffalo. Jones, who went 13-0 as a Buckeye, has not done as well as expected, including his attitude, and Jackson lacks experience.

Lady Lions host Red Oak in Wednesday matinee

Ennis entertains Red Oak at 2 p.m. today, March 11, on the home field. The game will follow the junior varsity contest, which begins at noon. Both are against the Lady Hawks. Red Oak, 14-14 in 2019, is presently 4-7.

HC Karah Kinder and an improved, hungry softball team are playing well after entering a number of tournaments. They were 12-8 headed into Tuesday night’s District 14-5A debut at Corsicana. After going 7-21-1 a year ago, the Lady Lions’ elevated play is encouraging.

Avalon lays down the gridiron gauntlet

Avalon rolled out their 2020 football schedule and it is definitely not for the faint of heart. After a Top Ten ranking, a district championship and an 11-1 season, the Eagles were placed in a considerably tougher district.

Making matters more challenging, only the top two teams in each district make the playoffs in Class 1A. The UIL then added Blum (13-2), the defending state champions, Bynum (7-4-1), who won their district championship, as well as Covington (8-2), who finished second in their district behind Blum.

Kitna lands another high school coaching gig

Burleson ISD introduced their new varsity football coach in Jon Kitna on Monday night. It was a unanimous decision by a selection committee that was approved by the school board and then by Superintendent Dr. Bret Jimerson, who backed the pick of brand new Athletic Director Kevin Ozee. Only on the job for three weeks, Ozee’s first move was surely meant to make a big splash.
