Ennis begins non-district baseball tune-up games

A young and eager Ennis baseball team has begun what they believe will be an improved contender in District 14-5A. Improving and contending could be two separate categories considering four of the eight teams in the league were ranked in the preseason.

Second year HC Kellen Monreal has four returning starters. Only Red Oak brings back less with three incumbent first stringers. Of course, it is who those starters are that makes the difference.

Mattie Beakley swatted homers on Wednesday, a three-run, seventh inning dinger in a 12-8 win over state ranked Waco Robinson, and then crushed a deep line-drive blast on Friday at Waxahachie. More on Ennis softball on Wednesday, March 11.

Harris, state-bound Lioness

Leah Harris, a power-laden Ennis senior, shashed a regional record at the Region 3 powerlifting championships on Thursday, March 5 at Longview Pinetree HS. In the bench press, she lifted 210 lbs. and placed second in the 181 lb. weight class.

Harris, the younger sister of Ennis alum, James Harris (now at Mary-Hardin Baylor) is the first ever girl to qualify for the state championship in school history. That competition is slated for Waco on March 21.

Ennis Track & Field coaches, led by Stephen Marrow and Lonnie Redning, have a young and blossoming girls team, both at the varsity and junior varsity level. The duo has seen their share of jumpers, vaulters, baton exchangers and sprinters over the years, yet their excitement over the talent and drive of the 2020 cast is as high as giraffe clearing hurdles.

Kilpatrick picks winners of state girls hoops

Fourteen-year veteran head coach of Ennis girls basketball, David Kilpatrick, has gazed into his crystal roundball to predict the winners of the 18 varsity girls games on tap for San Antonio this weekend at the state finals. Each of the six classes will have two semi-final games, some on Thursday and others on Friday, with the victors advancing to Saturday’s championship games.

Head Coach Wyatt Johnson was more than happy with the performance of the Ennis junior varsity tennis team at this week’s Breakout Tournament played against a six-team field in Ennis. Weather and the elements were just part of what made success hard to come by, and several players managed to persevere with strong finishes.

A pair of singles players went unbeaten in their bracket, Kerrigan Brown in the girls solo division, and Dylan Gunn in the boys singles. Brown’s win came at the expense of her teammate, Rosalinda Gonzalez, which meant Ennis had the best two females at the event.

Ennis varsity girls finished fourth with 46 points at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana. The junior varsity girls, however, racked up 102 points, good enough to finish in third. Here are the individual results:
