Palmer, Italy boys rock into post-season buckets

Palmer excised dogged-determination down the stretch to finish District 18-3A in a third place deadlock with Eustace (15-14), both with 8-6 marks. They met on Friday, Feb. 21, at Scurry-Rosser in a tie-breaker to determine who took third and who settled for fourth.

Ferris missed out on Playoff Action

In other Big 5 action, Ennis and Italy qualified, while Ferris (23-11) just missed out on a berth with a 1-6 finish. Avalon (6-13) did not punch their ticket for the second-season.

Tribe aims to make some noise

No. 12 ranked Waxahachie (28-6) meets Richardson Pearce (18-13), 7 p.m., Tues., Feb. 25, at Irving MacArthur in Class 6A action. The No. 1 ranked team in the state is Duncanville. They square off with South Grand Prairie on Mon., Feb. 24, 7 p.m., at Mansfield Legacy.

HC Melissa Fullmer had high praise for her players after a season-ending defeat left them feeling more than a bit deflated. Facing a China Spring (13-13) they were confident they could whip, the Lady Jackets couldn’t overcome a flat start in which they fell behind, 32-13 at the half. They rallied to within two points in the fourth before the upset-minded Cougars hung on to outlast them, 58-48.

Corsicana and Ennis, the only Class 5A schools competing at a 17-team powerlifting tournament held last weekend placed first and fourth in a tightly-contested event at Blooming Grove.

Softball Lions score late, edge Ferris, 4-3

Emma Rios delivered in the clutch with a basesloaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to spark Ennis to a 4-3 softball win over Ferris. Earlier she tied the game in the fifth inning with an RBI.

Injured Kemp player cleared

Ennis hosted a pair of girls basketball playoff games on Monday. No. 9 Grandview (29-5) rallied for 10 unanswered points to pull away from upset-minded Kemp (16-18), 44-27. The Lady Zebras held a 27-25 lead entering the fourth quarter.
