No. 1 Aledo (13-1) had just enough to survive a never-say-die, unranked Ennis (12-2) team, 43-36 in overtime, to advance to the state semifinals and a date next Saturday with No. 6 Lubbock Cooper (13-1). The loss ends the Lions 11-game winning streak while extending Aledo’s string of wins to 13.

Cooper overcame a 17-10 halftime deficit to Wichita Falls Rider to win, 38-17. That game will be played at Abilene Christian University.

The Lions, who never led, were on the ropes several times before making a stirring comeback to tie the game twice, at 29-29 and 36-36.

Pre-district games continue, not to mention area tournaments for Big 5 girls basketball teams in Eastern Ellis County. Out of the gate, both Italy and Palmer are racking up wins.

New Head Coach Rolandrus Raindle, the new varsity coach at Italy, has the Class 2A Lady Gladiators off to a 6-2 start. A Corsicana H.S. grad, he completed his degree at Prairie View A&M University and got his first whistle and clipboard at his alma mater, Corsicana. This year he was hired by Italy Athletic Director, Craig Horn, and is enjoying a fruitful first month.

Football has been a part of my life since junior high when a friend introduced me to electric football. I never understood the game until reading the rule book about those plastic men on a vibrating surface. Nearly five decades the game is still electric to me.

Well, at least high school and college. Never thought I’d say it, but the NFL has changed so much, and not for the good.

University Interscholastic League officials released classification cutoff numbers and enrollment numbers that will effect which class, division and district for teams across the state. The changes will begin in the fall of 2020.

Known as the king of beasts, the Panthera Leo typically inhabits plains, grasslands and forests, though some dwell in high altitudes. An apex or keystone predator, the lion is second in size to the tiger, but is considered the best in battle, as they fight in a pride whereas the Panthera Tigris is solitary.

The Ennis Lions have climbed up into the rarefied air where they will soon encounter the Aledo Bearcats on Friday at The Star. Hall of Fame Head Coach Sam Harrell will be making his sixth trip to the state quarterfinals, where only eight teams remain.

Facing their tallest order of the season, upstart Ennis returns to The Star in Frisco on Friday, Dec. 6, for a quarterfinal clash with No. 1 ranked Aledo. Both teams are 12-1 and riding long winning streaks.
The teams have met a few times before, though the most recent occurred in the 2013 state semifinals in Midlothian. Both were 14-0 at the time when Aledo broke a scoreless halftime tie in what became a 29-6 win.

Starting Middle Linebacker Payton Chapman (22) was carted off the field last Friday with 8:55 to go in the game, but not before a boisterous prayer prompted his "L" hand sign and a smile from Team Chaplain, Todd Gray.
