Gerald Wayne Doherty

Gerald Wayne Doherty entered the gates of Heaven in the early morning hours of June 5, 2024. He was greeted by his Heavenly Father surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Ennis, Texas on March 14, 1945, to Elmer and Mildred Walker Doherty. He grew up in Ennis and graduated from Ennis High School in 1963. He then attended Navarro College where he met the love of his life, Nita Warren. They married in June 1965 and shortly thereafter he joined the Army National Guard from 1965-1971. He completed basic training in Fort Ord California before he became an APC driver. At the time of his death, he was a 63-year member of Tabernacle Baptist Church of Ennis where he loved to serve. He also loved the fellowship he had with his senior men’s Sunday School class. He was also a member of Shriners and a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge 369 of Ennis.

He started working at an early age and was well known for his hard work ethic, honesty and integrity. He started multiple companies alongside his two brothers where he worked hard to provide for his family. In recent years he retired from Doherty Brothers Construction. Over the years he enjoyed car races, flying as an instrument rated pilot, but mostly spending time with his grandchildren.

He enjoyed his retirement to the fullest at his family farm restoring classic cars and fishing. His most special memories are those made with his grandkids at the farm and family vacations.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Mildred Doherty, his brother Gary Doherty, sister-in-law Margaret Doherty and nephew Chris Cooper.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Nita, his daughter Pam and husband Lance Bailey of Mc-Gregor, son Brad and wife Jennifer Doherty of Ennis, grandchildren Mason and Meredith Bailey, Austin and Addison Doherty, brother Bill Doherty, sister Janice and husband Tim Cooper, and sisterin-law Diane Liska, all of Ennis.

Pallbearers: John Ewell, Raul Fira, Mike Harrison, Bengy Hurd, Gary Mitchell, Larry Mullins, Stan Murph and E. L. Sublett.

We would like to extend a personal thanks to everyone on staff at Legend Oaks Rehabilitation Center of Ennis. He was so loved and cared for by staff that became close friends. We would also like to thank Bristol Hospice.

Visitation was held on Sunday, June 9, 2024 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel in Ennis.

A celebration of his life was held on Monday, June 10, 2024 at 10 a.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Ennis with Pastor Glenn Hejny officiating. A family burial service will be held at a later date.
