Leonard Francis Marusak

Leonard Francis Marusak, known affectionately as “Papa,” passed away peacefully at home on June 27, 2024, at the age of 85 in Denton, Texas. One of 13 children, he was born in Ennis, Texas on October 4, 1938 to Joseph and Agnes (Zmolik) Marusak. Leonard graduated from St. John’s Catholic School in Ennis, Texas, and furthered his education at the University of Dallas and the University of North Texas. In 1965 he married his college sweetheart, Denice Eubank, and moved to Ranger, Texas not long thereafter. Ranger is where they lived and raised their family until they moved to Robson Ranch Denton in 2006.

Leonard’s professional life was deeply rooted in education; he worked at Ranger College from 1965 until his retirement in 2004, first as a U.S. History Professor and later as Academic Dean. Leonard’s passion for history was not only evident in his teaching but also in the way he engaged with everyone around him, often enriching conversations with historical anecdotes, insights, and many unique phrases that only he could dream up.

Beyond his academic contributions, Leonard was a pillar in his religious community. He volunteered countless hours at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Ranger, Texas, and after moving to Denton County, he continued his service at Our Daily Bread and maintained the grounds of St. Mark’s Church well into his 85th year.

Leonard’s personal life was filled with diverse interests and hobbies. He was an avid reader, managing to complete a book a week for over 60 years, and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, gardening, fishing, singing in the choir and savoring a cold beer. He was often engaged in home improvement projects, either at his home or someone else’s, always lending a helping hand. His humor and candid nature were sources of joy and laughter for his family, students, and friends. Family was so important to him, and he had a bond with his grandchildren that will forever be cherished.

Leonard is survived by his loving wife, Denice; daughter Rachel and her husband Geoff Henrion; son Andy and his wife Michaela; grandchildren William, Kate, and Sam Henrion, Teague and Delaney Marusak; sisters Mary Ann Gagen and Marcy Krieger, and brother George.

A memorial service is planned at the Robson Ranch clubhouse, with details to be announced. Leonard’s life and legacy will be celebrated and remembered by the many lives he touched. As Leonard would often say, “Keep the Faith.”
