Laura Jean Snell Isom

Laura Jean Snell Isom, 93, joined the choir of angels on April 22 , 2024. Death has no hold on her for she is triumphantly rejoicing in the arms of her Lord and Savior. She has been reunited with her husband, Buck (George Wade Isom) and son, Michael Dee along with her parents, Nell (Ridley) and Tom Snell, brother, Tommy, and sister, Ola Nell Jennings.

Jean was born on July 6, 1930, in Ennis, Texas where she graduated from Ennis High School and was a member of the Southern Baptist Church. Jean and Buck were married on October 2, 1948, and celebrated 61 years together until Buck’s passing in 2009. They were blessed with three sons, Larry, Garry (Geg) and Mike.

She spent her life in Ennis, Dallas, Bardwell, Big Lake, Rockwood and San Angelo, Texas. She was a simple woman who enjoyed the blessings given to her by God. Her younger years were full and very busy being a wife, mom, bookkeeper, and office manager for Isom Implement, the three John Deere dealerships that Buck and Jean owned. She loved to cook! You could count on her house to always have the smell of great food filling the air. She always had room for one more at her table and she wouldn’t let you leave hungry. She would stay up all night to finish a book then get up early the next day for work. She had several great friends in her lifetime, but one was particularly special, Mary Nell Witt. They shared in many memorable adventures (escapades) together.

She loved to travel. Bags were always packed and ready to go on any of Buck’s hunting trips or other adventures. She enjoyed her time playing golf with him in Ennis, but she really enjoyed playing golf in Big Lake. That is where Mam and Pap gave all the grandkids mandatory golf lessons. She also enjoyed getting to see the new baby calves and riding in the pastures with Buck as he checked the cows.

After Buck passed, her attention was given to Bandit and Dude, her faithful four-legged companions, who never left her side. They shared many snacks and many, many sandwiches together. There were never enough phone calls, visits, or family gatherings for Mom, Mamaw loved her family and friends. The grandchildren and the greats were her biggest pleasures in her later years. Mamaw made many memories that will not to be forgotten with her seven grandchildren, Gerald (Jamie), Matt (Jillian), Zak (Amanda), Andrew (Sierra) and Hunter Isom, Katy Curry (Jack), Mika Shani (Robert). She also had her 14 great grands that will miss her as well, Lucas, Juliana, Gregory, Conner, Dakota, Ava, Zak, and Kinley Isom, Capp and Coy Curry, Haley and Emily Wilborn, Zara and Zoey Shani.

She is survived by her family, Larry (Donna Trojacek), Geg (Melissa Stevens), mentioned grandchildren and greats, her sister-in-law, Peggy Snell, brother-in-law, Charles Newman and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom (Mamaw) will be laid to rest at Myrtle Cemetery with grave side services under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of San Angelo.

She was fond of the poem below and had it in her bible: “To laugh often, and love much, To win respect of intelligent persons And the affection of children; To earn the approbation of honest Critics and to endure the betrayal Of false friends; to appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; to give of One’s self; to leave the world a bit better, Whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, Or a redeemed social condition; to have played And laughed with enthusiasm and sung with Exultation; to know that even one life has Breathed easier because you have lived - This is to have SUCCEEDED.” Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
