Bragging rights between friendly rivals, Ennis and Waxahachie, continued on Friday night. While things have been nasty for years, inhabitants of the two towns often root for one another as long as the opponent isn’t each other.

No. 6 Ennis snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by scoring an overtime touchdown and then went for broke by converting a two-point conversion to stun Waxahachie, 22-21, at a near packed Lumpkins Stadium.

The Lions dominated the first half, though they held only a 7-0 lead. Waxahachie then scored two TDs after intermission to send the contest into overtime. After the Indians scored easily, going 25-yards in just two plays when QB Roderick Hartsfield, Jr. teamed up with WR Keith Abney from 23-yards out to take their first lead of the night at 21-14.

Battle for Hwy 287 set for Friday

Over a century in the making, the Battle for 287 rivalry between Ennis and Waxahachie resumes next Friday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m. at Lumpkins Stadium. Capacity is set at 9,012, though a full-house is expected. Advance purchase of tickets and early arrival is advised.

According to Ennis, the series is tied at 51-51-2, while ‘Hachie says this is the 100th meeting. The Lions have won the last two games, 38-0 in 2020 and 21-13 at Lumpkins in 2019.

Over the past 10 years, however, the Indians hold a narrow 6-4 margin, and over 15 it tightens a bit, with Waxahachie on top, 8-7.

Battle for 287

Next Friday, Oct. 9, the rivalry for Hwy 287 bragging rights is scheduled between Ennis and Waxahachie. The game will take place at Lion Memorial Stadium with a 7:30 p.m.

Do your part by donning the Maroon and White, with North 287 visitors to spread their share of Green and White. Waxahachie leads the all-time series with 51 wins to 50 by Ennis.

Ennis took the 287 sign after beating the Tribe a year ago, 21-13. Both the Lions and Indians won their opener last week.

Ennis’ running game was on point Friday night. Gaining over 400 yards against a good Red Oak defense spoke well of the new O-Line and surprising cohesion for the first game.

Dee Johnson (12-150, 1 TD), Collin Drake (91 yds) and Davion Beasley (9- 131, 3 TD’s) did the Lion’s share of the damage.
