One of the most beloved women in Ennis, Sandy Anderson, passed away on Nov. 9 following a courageous bout with cancer. She lived an illustrated life and was involved in numerous causes and organizations and was viewed by many as a living embodiment of Ennis.

Some of her admirers or colleagues spoke about what she was known for, or about her life as a passionate advocate for all things Ennis. She left little doubt about how strongly she believed.

Interest in wildflowers, especially bluebonnets, on Palmer’s Witt Ranch lasted for a number of years prior to 2018, and owners Brett and Sonya Witt were always proud to show off their little slice of bluebonnet heaven to the hundreds of tourists who drove by to admire it.

The first Bluebonnet Trails event was hosted by the Ennis Garden Club in 1952. The Denton Record Chronicle of April 3 of that year announced this new project: “A trail covering approximately 48 miles has been laid by a committee from the garden club, sponsoring organization for the free-of-charge event which promises to be an annual attraction. Maps may be obtained from filling stations at the intersections of Highways 34 and 75 in Ennis.”

Spring is in the air, and for the first time in a year, residents actually have a reason to get outside. The annual Bluebonnet Trails Festival is upon us, and taking center stage are the Texas state flowers. And aren’t they standing magnificent and tall?

Along roadsides and meadows, sometimes accented with Indian Paintbrush, the Bluebonnet is cause for more ooh and ahhs since the most recent firework show. Getting out and touring the area has brought plenty of encouragement to Texans.

The 2020 cancellation of the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival for only the second time in its 59-year history didn’t stop the memories of this city-defining event and this year hopes that it will resume have come true.

This month the trails opened April 1 as usual and all of April is devoted to the appeal of the legendary Bluebonnet Trails, first mapped out in 1952 and still attracting locals and tourists alike.

All the historical news items of local happenings in this article relate to the bluebonnet and our city’s celebration of the state flower.

During the height of the Texas State Flower’s peak month, the City of Ennis returns with its annual Bluebonnet Festival, April 16-18.

Check out the scenic trails abloom, and don’t miss the disco band, Le Freak, on April 16, Ultimate Journey tribute band on the 17th, and the high adrenaline music and creativity of 80’s band Spazmatics on Sunday afternoon, April 18.
