Couple returns to Uganda with food, gifts

An Ennis couple, Cooper and Phyllis Stewart, are making a return visit to rural Uganda in time for Christmas. Their service as volunteers will provide them with opportunities to serve the needs of children and roughly 400 widows in a half dozen villages.

The Stewarts will soon fly out of DFW to Amsterdam (Netherlands), with a connecting flight to Kampala, the capital of Uganda. It is a five-hour, two-lane drive to Mbale (Embah-lee), a city of 96,000. They will be based for three weeks in a small village, Busamaga (BOO-sah-mah-ga).

Historical documents to be preserved

Donations of historical documents, photographs and, in some cases, clothing, continue to be made by Ennisites to the archive being assembled by local historian and Ennis News contributing writer Randy Bryan Bigham, recently re-hired as a correspondent following an absence of over a year and a half due to a corporate layoff resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some of the contributions came from former Ennis City Manager Steve Howerton, who wrote Bigham that he would like to see a number of civic documents included in the archive.

By providing Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance for families in need, they will be distributing meal kits for families in Ellis County as well as gifts for children through the Christmas Angel Tree program. They are in need of food and monetary donations for Thanksgiving as well as sponsors for the children on the Angel Tree.

Oak Timber Senior Apartments Christmas Fundraiser

Volunteers with Oak Timbers Senior Apartments are raising funds to provide holiday gifts and decor this year for their residents’ common areas. Citizens can purchase raffle tickets at $2 each or simply donate to the cause. Tickets must be bought by Sept. 21 at Oak Timbers, 1600 W. Lake Bardwell, Ennis. The raffle, which includes great prizes, is scheduled for Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. For more information, call 214-399-1031.

Making spirits bright, the annual Christmas raffle at Oak Timbers Senior Independent Living complex in Ennis nears its Sept. 15 deadline for purchasing tickets or making donations.

Located at 1600 W. Lake Bardwell Dr., next to the new police and fire department, a group of volunteers raise money for the purpose of decorating some of the public areas at the facility.

According to Jane Mize, a five-year resident and volunteer, they also provide Christmas cheer and gifts for many of the seniors who call Oak Timbers their home.

Kiwanis Club reaches out to Ennis

With nearly 600,000 members in eighty nations worldwide, Kiwanis International, a 105 year old nondenominational service organization – with service to kids at its heart - is in the early stages of chartering the Kiwanis Club of Ennis, and is reaching out to interested Ennis area residents and businesses.
