The Temptations’ “Papa was a Rolling Stone” was a huge hit in 1972. It was about a guy who couldn’t settle down, even when he had a wife and kids. The chorus started with the name of the song and was followed by, “Wherever he laid his hat was his home, and when he died all he left us was alone.”
