EISD has buoyant start

Ennis Independent School District opened the 2021-2022 school year with a rousing start with a record number of students in class even with a small number (30) of COVID cases among students and staff. According to the Central Offices at 303 W. Knox, this past school year closed with 5,677 pupils after the previous year had ascended to an all-time EISD high of 5,950.

As of last Friday, a new high-water mark of 5,955 was attained.

Mask on, mask off, schools respond

Return to school has its annual share of shopping for clothes and supplies as well as the Centers for Disease Control recommending indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. According to the CDC, children should return to full-time, inperson learning this fall with layered prevention strategies in place.

EISD is casting a vision

When no one casts a vision, people perish. The oft-quoted passage from Proverbs 29:18 provides great hope for spiritual and leadership direction. Theologians view the verse as saying, “Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off constraint.”

Truth from the scripture is simple, yet profound. When people can’t see what God is doing, they stumble over themselves, says The Message translation. It then adds, if they attend to what is revealed, they are blessed.

Drake announces when ticket sales begin

No. 7 ranked Ennis will soon make available season ticket sales according to Athletic Director Don Drake. Renewals for current season ticket holders will start on July 19 and run through August 6.

Fans should access renewals online through GoFan, the Lions online ticket provider or purchase them in person at the Ennis athletic office on Lake Bardwell Drive. Drake told The Ennis News that GoFan will be emailing all current season ticket holders on the 19th to notify them that renewals have begun. Watch for postcards reminders in the mail.

Nutrition, variety added to menus

If the kitchen is the heart of every home, then the dining hall is where people come to share meals and life. Campus gatherings are a source of social interaction infused with nutrition.

A recent hire by the Ennis Independent School District, Alejandro “Alex” Pineda (pa-NAY-da) as the nutrition director, appears to paint with a wide brush when it comes to describing ideas for feeding children and young people at the 10 campuses.

Georgina Hurtado named Elementary Teacher of the Year

Ennis Independent School District has announced the 2021 teachers of the year.  Georgina Hurtado teaches at Carver Early Childhood Center and has been named Elementary Teacher of the year.  She will move on to the regional level and be considered for the Region 10 Teacher of the Year, which will be named in late July.

Justin Aranjo named Secondary Teacher of the Year

Ennis Independent School District has announced the 2021 teachers of the year. Justin Aranjo is Secondary Teacher of the Year and teaches at Ennis Junior High School. He will move on to the regional level and be considered for the Region 10 Teacher of the Year, which will be named in late July.

Building a qualified administrative staff and maintaining one through the inevitable changes over the years is seldom as perfect as assembling a jigsaw puzzle. It just appears that way since the arrival of EISD Superintendent Jay Tullos. His introduction of Dr. Darin Jolly is a case in point.

The 48-year-old came on board as Assistant Superintendent of Accountability and Operations, officially abbreviated the Deputy Supt. last month. His responsibilities will include restructuring human resources, evaluating personnel and supporting principals in the district.

EISD reels in new principal, Joseph Melms

Ennis Independent School District officials announced Joseph Melms as the new principal at Ennis High School. Currently the principal at Grand Prairie’s Young Men’s Leadership Academy, where he has served for four years, his new position in Ennis is set to start on June 1.

Mr. Melms, 41, attended Midlothian H.S. and Dallas Baptist University, and he was in the Navy in between. He follows Wade Bishop, presently the principal at EHS. Earlier this spring the genial Bishop was elevated to Assistant Superintendent of Accountability at the Central Offices downtown.

EISD reports moves in administration

Ennis Independent School District announced administrative moves on Thursday, including news that Deputy Superintendent, Mr. Jason Gilstrap, has been named the Head of Schools with the Floresville ISD, thirty-five miles southeast of San Antonio.

Gilstrap has been with EISD since 2016. Friday, April 9 was his final day. Floresville (pop. 7,585) has five campuses in its school district of approximately 4,200 students. The Class 5A high school includes 1,234.
