Juenemann proclaims mayoral re-election bid

Angeline Juenemann announced on Facebook on Thursday, Jan. 14, her plans to run for a second four-year term as mayor of Ennis. She was voted into office in May of 2016.

The first woman ever elected as mayor says her “love and desire are to continue to work for my community.” It is those elements that led her to seek another term.

Lil’ detective Kennedy Slovak discovers downtown elves

Thirty-three locations in downtown Ennis were subject to scores of visiting elves in recent months… so many that city leaders asked for help in detecting there whereabouts. This past week a drawing was held of those who submitted which stores had an elf inhabiting their premises.

A bright and promising future awaits the Ennis High School marching band, whose superior-rating includes 63 of the last 64 years. It is because of the dedication and the developing skills evident in the members of the Ennis Junior High band.

Ellzey sworn in as State Rep

Local State Representative for this area, Jake Ellzey, was sworn in at the state capital in Austin on Tuesday for the 87th Texas Legislature. He succeeds John Wray in House District 10.

“I’m humbled and blessed to be able to serve the people of our community. I will serve with honor, dignity and quiet professionalism,” Rep. Ellzey said in press release the same day.

Eeyore's gloomy ruminations

It’s hard not to relate to the pessimism of Eeyore, the character in the Winniethe-Pooh books by A.A. Milne. He first appeared in 1926, so he’s been around for a long time. He’s gloomy, depressed and anhedonic – unable to experience pleasure when it would be a normal response. He’s an old grey stuffed donkey and he’s a friend of Pooh Bear.

Eeyore eats thistles but he has won the hearts of readers and fans of the cartoon series for his undying loyalty. He’s known for losing his tail, which is held on by a tack. His voice is quite sad, yet adorable.

A parting gift from haters

I’ll admit, I had no idea that throngs of people were gathering at the U.S. capitol grounds last week. The declaration by electors to cast official votes has almost always been a formality, though Democrats had threatened to turn the table on Donald Trump when he was elected. On two other occasions in the past two decades, each time by the same party, the move was attempted but never amounted to anything.

To the best of my knowledge, my parents have never seen a movie in a theater nor a stage play, although I might consider some of the drama produced by my uncle, an Assembly of God minister, high drama. If you could have experienced his time in the pulpit, you would probably agree.

Dear Editor:

The Ennis High football field should be named for Sam Harrell and family. What a great legacy he and his family have given to Ennis High School and the city of Ennis. But just as deserving is the family of Ivan Goodwin. How many thousands of band students have marched on that field over the years? I think the fans of Ennis High football are just as proud for the contributions the Ennis High marching band makes to Friday night games as our football team.

Lions whip ‘Cana, 70-56, rise to 3-1 in district

Flying out of the blocks, Ennis jumped to an early 12-point lead and held off any comeback attempt by Corsicana in a 70-56 triumph on the road on Tuesday. The Lions improved their record to 3-1 and a tie with Waco University for second place in District 14-5A.

In the other two league games, first place Midlothian (4-1) blew out winless Cleburne, 50-21, and University edged Joshua, 52-48, in Waco. Red Oak had a bye.
