Godley pulls away from Ferris in fourth

Two teams desperate for a win to remain in contention in District 5-4A, Godley and Ferris, fought tooth and nail until a series of game-changing plays led the visiting Wildcats to a 35-7 win.

Ferris (3-3 / 0-1) pulled to within 14-7 in the third quarter with a 63-yard, nine-play drive, capped with a 16-yard dash to glory by senior QB Nate Aguinaga. Francis Reese booted the point after. The Stingers used five rushes for 28 by Aguinaga and two-for 21 from Kayden Barnes to get the job done.

Ennis varsity volleyball might be as green as frog feathers this season, but the Lady Lions show no evidence of quit. True, their miscues outnumber their highlights, but this group enjoys the process together.

A week ago they took a game from Red Oak for the first time in seven years. Not a match, but a single game, which tied the best-of-five set, before the visiting Hawks buckled down and won the next two to win, 3-1.

Friday Night Lights have been burning brightly since August 28 for schools in Class 1A-through-4A and for Class 5A and 6A since Sept. 25. That’s 8 weeks of action for the first group while this weekend marks four Friday’s for the larger schools.

High-wheeling at high speeds, the annual NHRA AAA Fall Nationals took place at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis last weekend. The dragstrip opened its action on Thursday and continued on Friday when photographer Fred Phipps caught this funny car popping a wheelie.

"I just got there and had yet to set up my gear when this race started," he said. "So I grabbed my cell phone and just clicked."
