Way-maker is Ward 2 commissioner

Lifelong Ennis resident Bruce Jones is a way-maker.

He was elected to a three year term as City Commissioner of Ward 2 back in November of 2020, and has quickly become involved in the plans and direction for Ennis.

Recently retired, he welcomed the opportunity to serve his hometown, especially the Ward 2 position left open after Marco Hernandez’ term expired. The mature neighborhood includes the Madison to downtown area, to the Ennis State Bank and over to Lampasas.

He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother

Recently installed at Veterans Memorial Park in Ennis is the “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” statute. Cast in bronze and actually very heavy, it will be dedicated on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Buddy Markham and local veterans will present the sculpture and its accompanying plaques during the annual outdoor program.

Harriet Adams saving old books from Raphael House

Harriett Adams, owner for 25 tears of the Raphael House, 500 Ennis Avenue, communicated recently with her contacts with the Ennis Historical Society that she had rediscovered a collection of old books that were once part of the Raphael family library.

Arrest in Ennis tied to Cedar Hill murder

A suspect who was an alleged participant in a Cedar Hill homicide, Kenneth Morris, was arrested on the 700 block of N. Gaines in Ennis on Tuesday, Sept. 7.

Morris, 36, lives in the 1800 block of Tar Road (east of Hwy 67), the same address as the deceased male. The victim was found when Cedar Hill police were performing a welfare check at 8:20 a.m. Details of the identity of the deceased, nor the manner of death, were released in statements sent to the media, nor after phone calls from The Ennis News.

No. 6 Ennis snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by scoring an overtime touchdown and then went for broke by converting a two-point conversion to stun Waxahachie, 22-21, at a near packed Lumpkins Stadium.

The Lions dominated the first half, though they held only a 7-0 lead. Waxahachie then scored two TDs after intermission to send the contest into overtime. After the Indians scored easily, going 25-yards in just two plays when QB Roderick Hartsfield, Jr. teamed up with WR Keith Abney from 23-yards out to take their first lead of the night at 21-14.

At 9:37 a.m. on September 11, 2001, five hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia. All 53 passengers and six crew members perished in the crash, and an additional 125 military and civilian personnel on the ground were killed in the fire caused by the crash.

Palmer falls in five at Kerens

A see-saw affair that was highly-contested between Palmer and Kerens, went the distance before the host Bobcats won the last two games, Palmer won games one and three, 30-28 and 25-16, while Kerens earned the second game, 25-13. The Bobcats regrouped to defeat the Lady Bulldogs, 25-13 and 15-7 in the deciding set.

A life of service is its own reward

Leave it to someone who has spent their life on the frontlines to recognize others who are called to clean up the mess that is sometimes humanity.

A man who did plenty of good in his years of service, Ed Lane does Ennis proud. The retired Army First Sergeant, 73, was born here, educated here – and was a member of the last graduating class of Carver High School (1967). He spoke this week of the role that First Responders play in American society.
