Rose Stivers: Ellis County’s ‘burger lady’

Rose’s Bluebonnet Sandwich Shop was, for more than 60 years, the best known hamburger joint in Dallas that no one could ever find. Well, many people did find it, but only after much searching. Owner Rose Stivers was from Alma, and despite the popularity of her burgers with die-hard foodies, she remained a small-town girl at heart and couldn’t have cared less about publicity.

Ennis Garden Club announces Yards of the Season

The Ennis Garden Club has announced the 2021 Spring Yards of the Season. The Yards of the Season are selected three times a year: Autumn, Spring, and Summer. The yards, nominated by members of the Ennis Garden Club, are selected in each of the four EISD elementary school districts. Homes are chosen using the following criteria: curb appeal, neatness, seasonal landscaping, and owner involvement. The Yards of the Season for Spring 2021 are: (Travis District) 304 E. Baylor, Oscar and Anna Rodriguez; (Austin District) 2503 Inverrary, Stephen and Rayla Coakes; (Bowie District) 609 N.

EHS student awarded scholarship

No. 3 Italy softball on course for state

No. 3 ranked Italy didn’t take kindly to Bosqueville handing them a 3-2 setback in Game Two of their Regional Quarterfinal last week. Holding a 2-0 lead over the Lady Bulldogs heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Bluetick Hounds came back to win, 3-2. It dropped Italy to 33-2 on the season.

Junior fireballer Emily Janek, who blanked the Bosque Barkers in Game One, 5-0, gave them a diet of nothing until they bunched two timely hits to level the series. Game Three started thirty-minutes later, and so did a new dawn for the Lady Gladiators.

Ennis Garden Club members have elected officers for the 2021-2022 season. Having recently completed an outstanding month of Bluebonnet Trails while also sponsoring the annual Bluebonnet Festival, drawing over 35,000 visitors to downtown, the distinguished group of ladies began planning for next spring.

The Mercy Award recognizes one employee from each of LifePoint Health’s hospitals who profoundly touches the lives of others and best represents the spirit and values on which the company was founded.

Governor lifts mask mandate

On Tuesday, May 18, Governor Greg Abbott issued an Executive Order prohibiting governmental entities in Texas, including counties, cities, school districts, public health authorities, or government officials from requiring or mandating mask wearing. Public schools may continue to follow current mask-wearing guidelines through June 4. After June 4, no student, teacher, parent or other staff member or visitor can be required to wear a mask while on campus.

Justin hires new City Manager, Chuck Ewings

Former Ennis City Manager, Charles “Chuck” Ewings, was hired last week in the same capacity at the City of Justin, Texas. Located just north of Ft. Worth in the Alliance Corridor near Texas Motor Speedway, Justin is poised with great potential for residential growth.

Only 16 miles south of Denton, Justin is near Argyle, both with populations neighboring 4,000. Close by is Grapevine Lake.

Mayor Pro Tem Jake Holland loves history

Ennis Mayor Pro Tem Jake Holland is a chip off the old Czech history block.

With wife Jessica, Jake loves music and dancing – “country and polka mostly,” he says, adding, “Jessica and I won the polka dance contest at the polka festival in 2012, which earned us the title as polka festival King and Queen that year. We are both proud of our Czech heritage and are passing down the traditions to our kids.”
