Oak Timbers seeking donations for raffle

Making spirits bright, the annual Christmas raffle at Oak Timbers Senior Independent Living complex in Ennis nears its Sept. 15 deadline for purchasing tickets or making donations.

Located at 1600 W. Lake Bardwell Dr., next to the new police and fire department, a group of volunteers raise money for the purpose of decorating some of the public areas at the facility.

According to Jane Mize, a five-year resident and volunteer, they also provide Christmas cheer and gifts for many of the seniors who call Oak Timbers their home.

Atmos, EPL gift to enrich Lions Park

Meeting a need for patrons and visitors at Lions Park, at the corner of Lampasas and South Hall streets, is a collaborative new effort between the Ennis Public Library and Atmos Energy.

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, the tandem of the EPL and Atmos partnered to present a $6,500 check in what has been described as “a mutual initiative to positively impact the community through early literacy.”

The donated funds will be used to purchase and install permanent, in-ground StoryWalk exhibits around the half-mile trail at Lion’s Park.

Call Center’s mission

As for the ongoing purpose of the Bluebonnet Call Center, where Gonzales is the coordinator, when a request for assistance comes in, it is quickly logged and forwarded to a team leader. They, in turn, pass the request to one of their volunteers to fulfill.

Kiwanis Club reaches out to Ennis

With nearly 600,000 members in eighty nations worldwide, Kiwanis International, a 105 year old nondenominational service organization – with service to kids at its heart - is in the early stages of chartering the Kiwanis Club of Ennis, and is reaching out to interested Ennis area residents and businesses.

Maise Park murderers still at large

A second murder in August, which claimed the life of a former Ennis High School student, Jordy Gutierrez, 19, has yet to lead to an arrest.

He died of a single gun shot wound at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 20. The shot was fired at Roger Maise Park, 900 E. Martin Luther King Dr., across the street from Ennis Fire Station No. 2.

Driver survives horrific I-45 crash

An 18-year old driver can thank his lucky stars he walked away from a huge wreck on Wednesday evening.

At the wheel of a 2004 Toyota Camry, he was sent into the northbound I-45 median barrier cables where his vehicle went airborne, hit a light pole and landed upside down. The young man was able to exit the flipped vehicle on his own, rattled but completely unharmed. When emergency responders and Ennis Police arrived he was seated on the rail and cooperated with the investigation.

After Texas Gov. Greg Abbott declared Ellis County a part of the Hurricane Laura Disaster Declaration, not for damages done, but instead for serving people fleeing north on the I-45 corridor. Here Ennis Fire Marshall Chad Wester helps render aid to a woman from Lake Charles, Louisiana. A number of EFD staff were involved in the project.

The Knights of Columbus Hall served to provide food, snacks, fruit and water as well as directing people towards available lodging. Gift cards were also available while supplies lasted.

Chamber moves to new home downtown

Being brave to say good-bye is allowing the Ennis Chamber of Commerce to say hello to a brand new future in downtown. Following 36 years of productivity along SB I-45, the opportunity to move inside the Welcome Center in the heart of town proved too great to resist.

City planners designed the expanded facility on the corner of NW Main and Knox Street with the hope the Chamber would join the home for visitors and tourism, not to mention a host of other civic offices.
