Ferris seeks offense vs. Venus

Two teams struggling to develop offensive chemistry will meet when the Ferris Lady Jackets (6-15, 1-2) entertains Venus (4-18, 0-4) on Jan. 6. On Tuesday, Jan. 10, the Stingers trek to Hillsboro (14-7, 0-4) and take to the road on Jan. 13 for a game vs. Godley (17-6, 3-0).

Hit and run arrest made in Ferris

An arrest has been made by the Ferris Police Department at 11:20 a.m. on Thursday morning, Jan. 6, after officers made contact with Jorge Garcia. He was deemed a person of interest in relation to an accident one week prior that involved injury or death.

Listed as a fatality hit and run, Garcia was placed in custody and has been charged with the responsibility. Law enforcement indicated the suspect, who is presumed innocent until proven guilty, was arrested and booked into the Ellis County Jail, 300 S. Jackson St. Waxahachie. The charge is a seconddegree felony.

Ferris had the most success of all Big 5 volleyball teams, producing 24 wins and a Bi-District victory to boot. Veteran HC Kyla Menefee saw her Yellowjackets perform at a steep grade higher than the 6-11 record they had in 2020.

The feisty Menefee credited the dedication and improvement in the individual performance of players, which led the Black and Orange to winning 18 matches without a single lost set.

In the playoffs they swept North Dallas, 3-0, 25-12, 25-9 and 25-11. However, they ran into a buzz-saw in Celina (42-2) in the Area Round, losing in three sets.

Ferris (24-9) was the lone Big 5 Bi-District volleyball winner on Tuesday. They flattened North Dallas, 3-0, at Forester Fieldhouse in Mesquite.

Led by setter Zyara Harrison and outside hitter Callie Ralston, a pair of dominating seniors, the Yellow Jackets, who had won 3-of-theirlast-four matches, breezed past the Lady Bulldogs, who were second in District 12- 4A. Harrison steered the Stingers to big wins of 25-12, 25-9 and 25-11 to make short work of North Dallas.

Three of the area’s Big 5 volleyball teams have reportedly clinched playoff berths.

Ennis snapped a five-match losing skid by dispatching Corsicana in three games on the road, Tuesday, Oct. 20, completing a second sweep of the Tigers this season.

The victory, 25-16, 25-19 and 26-24 was gratifying for the Lady Lions, especially the seniors. Starting the year 9-5, the team has dropped 15-of-18 and, at 2-8 in District 8-5A, are essentially out of the playoffs.

Their last date is on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 6:30 p.m. in Cleburne.

Area Big 5 teams enter the final three weeks of the regular season with Italy nearing a district championship while No. 33 Ferris (21-6) still has a chance for the top spot, though they must knock off the two teams, Heritage (20-18) at home on Oct. 12 and then at No. 14 Godley (26-7) on Oct. 15. When they met earlier they dropped 3-0 decisions.

The front-running Lady Glads (13-4) should thump Itasca but Avalon (8-6), at home, could make things difficult on Oct. 15.

When you’re hot, you’re hot, and when you’re not, you’re not - was a popular song in the 1970’s, yet it’s true. Early in their respective district volleyball seasons, three of the area’s Big 5 teams are en fuego while two others are looking for a spark.

Recovering from two weeks of cancelled matches, Italy claimed wins in their first two District 15-2A encounters, pounding Kopperl, 3-0; 25-8; 25-8; 25-10, and then bested Covington, 3-1; 25-18, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-10.

Ferris resident hits million dollar Mega prize

A Ferris resident recently claimed a second-tier Mega Millions prize worth $1 million. The winner, who has elected to remain anonymous, chose their numbers and played the game for the draw on August 31.  The ticket was purchased at Jaxx Fuel #8, located on North Highway 45, in Ferris. The winner was a Quick Pick that matched all five of the numbers drawn (8-14-31-58-68), just not the Mega. To win the Mega Millions jackpot, players must match all six numbers drawn including the Mega Ball.

Layne takes reins of Redwater Dragons

(First in a series of head coaching changes of note)

Former 2014 state champion Ennis Offensive Coordinator Brandon Layne left Ferris earlier this year for the head coach and athletic director position at Redwater in Northeast Texas.

In his five years at Ferris the Yellowjackets went 21-31 (.404). Upon leaving Bricktown, where the football team last won a playoff game in 2000, he improved the program in academics, attendance and discipline as well as qualifying for a playoff berth in each of the last four years.
