Aircraft carrier named for Dorie Miller

The World War II Pearl Harbor hero Doris “Dorie” Miller (1919-1943), the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross for valor, was honored last this year by the U.S. Navy with an aircraft carrier named for him.

Locals know the name of Miller well as Ennis has had a school named for him since the 1950s. During segregation, the Black community’s school was first named in his honor and when a new Ennis ISD intermediate school was built over a decade ago, the school board approved the hero’s name for that facility located on Lampasas St.

This fall marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The attacks on September 11, 2001 remain the deadliest terror attacks in world history, claiming more than 2,900 lives and causing countless injuries and long-term health problems for tens of thousands of civilians and first responders.

The Pentagon Memorial

At 9:37 a.m. on September 11, 2001, five hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia. All 53 passengers and six crew members perished in the crash, and an additional 125 military and civilian personnel on the ground were killed in the fire caused by the crash.

Memorial Day event welcomes everyone

Ennis invites locals and visitors to the 2021 Memorial Day Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 31, at Veterans Memorial Park. The one-hour venue draws crowds in the hundreds, with attendees encouraged to bring their own chairs as seating is limited.

The EVMP is located at 2301 Ennis Parkway, behind All-Star Lanes and Don Jose’s on the west end of Ennis Avenue.

The start of the program commences with a presentation of the colors by the Marine Corps League Color Guard, to be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Madison Bell.
