A slow start only delayed the inevitable as Palmer led from the outset and pulled away to thump Whitewright, 32-7, at Nevada Community H.S.

The bi-district football win lifted the Bulldogs season record to 8-1 and into the area round against Friday’s winner between Callisburg (9-1) and Dublin (7-3).

Palmer was a bit jittery at the start, but had little trouble moving the ball. Dominating the Golden Domes to the tune of 62 offensive plays, 323-yards rushing and another 174 passing for a 497-yard display.

Beasley signs with Arlington Baptist

Palmer senior Hayden Beasley will continue playing baseball at the college level after signing with Arlington Baptist University last week. The three-year veteran with the Bulldogs has been a very dependable pitcher and shortstop for the Black and Gold varsity.

“Hayden has been a key part to the success of our baseball program,” said HC Joe Robinson. “He works hard on the baseball field as well as in the classroom. He is what you look for in a student-athlete in every aspect. I expect him to be successful in college and when his playing days are over.”

Area high school football teams have weaved their way through an obstacle course to remain free of the dreaded coronavirus, not that it does great harm to young adults, but the near abrupt halt a team goes through in isolating players and coaches means at least a week or two delay.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, to their credit, produced their gridiron gospel during the coronavirus months in 2020 that would’ve prompted lesser publications to throw in the towell. Yet, Greg Tepper and Matt Stepp stayed on-point until the presses churned out another classic.

Baseball has long been a strength in Palmer, enough that reaching the playoffs is a foregone conclusion. A year ago HC Joe Robinson and the Bulldogs rode a 19-8-2 mark, into the area round before falling in three games to Gunter (27-9-1). Along with staffers Tim Hoff and Judge Wolfe, Robinson appears to have yet another contender on the make this year.

Palmer has long-established itself as a baseball town and a perennial contender. Plus, they have built a winning district record for at least 10 consecutive years.
