Inconsistent play by a young Ennis softball team reared its head again in a 6-3 defeat at the hands of last place Waco University. The Lady Lions, who outhit the Trojans, 9-6, got off to a miserable start.

Waco U collected all six of their hits in the first two innings to build a 6-1 lead. The Lady Lions also made three costly errors and didn’t appear focused until the third frame, and still struggled to hit with runners on base. It was only the second district win this year for the Trojans, whom Ennis edged at home last month, 6-3.

Ennis will feature a handful of new leaders when HC Sam Harrell unleashes the 2021 Lions football team this fall.

While two-time All-District MVP QB Collin Drake graduates and 6’3 junior Jackson Gilkey takes over the offense, the wide receivers will have a few new names to go along with 6’4 Skylan Simmons and Jace Berry. As for the offensive line, there will be three new starters.

District 14-5A girls basketball went 1-3 in first round playoffs, with District 13 quickly sending three teams home. No. 18 ranked Midlothian (19-5) and No. 19 Red Oak (22-5) tied for first with 11-1 league marks, only to see the Panthers upset by Royse City (14-9), 42-38, in bi-district.

Avalon made playoffs, many earn All-District

It wasn’t the encore they preferred, though following an 11-1 season, the best-ever for Class 1A Avalon, the team overcame a miserable start to somehow qualify for the playoffs. It didn’t last long, but it did point the Eagles toward an optimistic future.

Red Oak, Summit still alive

Two teams that Ennis soundly thrashed earlier in the season, Red Oak and Mansfield Summit, recovered and remain alive in the Class 5A Division I playoffs. That speaks volumes about the competition the Lions faced during the regular season.

Ranked No. 1 in the state since the start of the season, and bent on a state championship, Ennis saw their quest end prematurely, 42-28 last Friday to Mansfield Timberview at Midlothian ISD Stadium.

Young teens chosen to play in Florida

Seven area youth have been chosen to participate in an All-American soccer tournament, the Gold Cup Series, in Naples, Florida this month. Each was selected based on skill levels they displayed during a recent event in Round Rock, Texas.

They play on two Ennis-area teams and are coached by Joe Espino, an insurance adjuster and leader within the Ennis Soccer Association, and David Bauman, an assistant coach.

Many observers believe the 2020 state football champion will arise out of the 16-team field that is Region II of Class 5A. Of course the last two years has seen Aledo win their eighth and ninth state titles. This year they suffered a 27-17 setback at home to Class 6A Cedar Hill (7-1) on Oct. 16.

From the start of the season until now, Aledo has been ranked No. 2 behind front-running Ennis. The Lions, 8-0, are the favorite, though the their path to the final four is littered with landmines.

When Jay Tullos, head of EISD schools, handed the District 8-5A championship trophy to Head Coach Sam Harrell on Thursday following a 56-3 rout of Greenville, it was the 16th time an Ennis football team went undefeated in the regular season.

University Interscholastic League football playoffs consist of the top four teams in each district in Classes 2A up through 6A. Projecting matchups two weeks in advance is not very difficult, though predicting winners of games can always be a challenge.

The top four from Ennis’ District 8-5A are officially set, and while the league they’ll face in the bi-district round, District 7-5A, looks clear, their teams still have two games to play. Things can change.
