Crowd recalls service and sacrifice of Veterans

Perhaps the largest crowd in years gave recognition and honor to the men and women who served this nation, many of them paying the ultimate price, at Veterans Memorial Park on the west end of Ennis on Thursday.

Ed Lane (left) and Robert Bell were a few of the many who dedicated the new statue, “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother,” which now stands at the park.

A new tree was commemorated and has been planted adjacent to the two-ton sculpted piece.

Jolly Trumpet Tour

EISD Administrator Dr. Darin Jolly visited four campuses on Veterans Day and played TAPS on the trumpet. While he did not cause anyone to forget legendary trumpet player and Tonight Show Band Director Doc Severinsen, he drew attention to the spirit behind the holiday at Dorie Miller, Jack Lummus, Alamo DAEP and Ennis H.S.

Event to honor Veterans, Nov. 13

Ellis County Veterans and the general public are invited to attend the annual appreciation ceremony from 10 a.m. until noon at the Waxahachie Civic Center on Saturday, November 13. The event will provide a great opportunity to recognize and show respect for veterans in conjunction with the national Veterans Day slated for Nov. 11.

Veterans Day Program on tap for Nov. 11

Area residents are invited to the annual Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Veterans Memorial Park located behind Don Jose's Restaurant.  According to Budy Markham, masks and social distancing guidelines should be adhered. Those attending should plan to bring their own chair.  The cermony should end before noon. Ennis City Manager and veteran Marty Nelson will bring a short message. Veterans will be recognized. The laying of a wreath is scheduled as is a gun salute.

The month of November is a special time for the nation’s veterans. While Memorial Day honors fallen soldiers and service people, Veteran’s Day, which takes place each November, is an opportunity to commemorate the efforts of all who have been in the armed forces, with a special emphasis on living veterans. While people are encouraged to thank veterans throughout the year, Veteran’s Day is a particularly poignant time to show your appreciation for the men and women of the military.
