Century Club holds monthly meetings

For their October meeting, member of the Ennis Century Club met in the home of Cynthia Newsome with Kathy Morse presiding. Rachael Bishop assisted Mrs. Newsome as hostess. A buffet was served in the dining area of the home prior to the meeting. Penny Atwood presented the program, Twenty-five Facts You Did Not Know About Texas. In addition to regular members present, three new members were welcomed to the club including Henrietta Novotny, Janice Copeland and Judy Conatser.

Toys and gifts from the Salvation Army were delivered to the First United Methodist Church yesterday for distribution to families who signed up for the Angel Tree earlier this fall. As a result of countless donations, over 300 children will receive toys and clothes this Christmas. EISD staff and community volunteers assisted in the unloading of the boxes and sacks that will be distributed to families for the holiday. Thanks to everyone who assisted in this effort. #WeAreEnnis

Spinning wheel got to go ‘round

The 1960’s hit by the Blood, Sweat & Tears made riding the ferris wheel popular again. Autumn Daze began with the Hay Maze, and then came the arrival of what has become an annual family hit, the fall carnival. Talley Amusements, the same people who provide rides at the Texas State Fair, have returned to North Plaza and along NW Main through Sunday evening. Plus there are concerts on Saturday, headlined by Don Felder, and the Bellamy Brothers on Sunday.

Ennis Garden Club Yards of the Season

The Ennis Garden Club has announced the 2021 Autumn Yards of the Season. The Yards of the Season are selected three times a year: Autumn, Spring, and Summer. The yards, nominated by members of the Ennis Garden Club, are selected in each of the four EISD elementary school districts. Homes are chosen using the following criteria: curb appeal, neatness, seasonal landscaping, and owner involvement.

Keep Ennis Beautiful has announced that the 2021 North Texas Community Cleanup Challenge (NTCCC) has officially begun. The North Texas Community Cleanup Challenge is a friendly competition among North Texas communities to see who can cumulatively pick up the most litter between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31.

Sept. 28 date set for State Rep runoff

Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered Sept. 28 as the Special Runoff Election for the State

Representative District 10’s Unexpired Term. The announcement was official on Tuesday, Sept. 14. The notice for Ellis County included the early voting period, Sept. 20- 24, which is open for a section of Henderson County as well.

According to Jana Onyon, the Election Administrator for Ellis County, anyone voting early or on Election Day “can vote at any voting center polling location in Ellis County.”

Ferris resident hits million dollar Mega prize

A Ferris resident recently claimed a second-tier Mega Millions prize worth $1 million. The winner, who has elected to remain anonymous, chose their numbers and played the game for the draw on August 31.  The ticket was purchased at Jaxx Fuel #8, located on North Highway 45, in Ferris. The winner was a Quick Pick that matched all five of the numbers drawn (8-14-31-58-68), just not the Mega. To win the Mega Millions jackpot, players must match all six numbers drawn including the Mega Ball.

The Union Pacific Railroad’s famed “Big Boy” steam locomotive, built in 1940, chugged triumphantly into Ennis last weekend on its whistle stop tour of 10 states and a new Ennisarea resident was there with her grandchildren to see the excitement.

“I’m from Dallas and just moved near Alma to live with my daughter,” Ellen Gordon said. “She has been out of town, but when I heard about this old-fashioned train coming to Ennis, I knew I had to bring my grandsons. They love trains.”
