Capping the Class of 2021

Ennis High School held commencement exercises a week ago, presenting graduates from the Class of 2021. It was an evening sure to make maroon-loving alumni proud to relate to the current cast of seniors.

Ennis bands sweep superior ratings

Like bowling, they sat them up and knocked them down. The band program of the Ennis ISD sent five performing groups to the University Interscholastic League in-person Concert and Sightreading Contest over April 21-22 at Waxahachie High School. Every one of them rolled strikes without missing a pin.

According to Gary Goodwin, the director of the program, all five groups earned First Division Superior ratings in both the concert and sightreading portions of the competition.

Senior Spotlight: Michael Collins

There is no mistaking Michael D. Collins when he walks into a room. His entries are as bright as his personality is energetic, but it’s his approach to life that generates a 100- watt smile.

In fact, it takes effort for the Ennis High School senior to suppress that beaming grin, even when he is challenged to project a game face.

Ennis spring game set for May 13

Building up to the start of the 2021 fall football season, Ennis has scheduled their annual spring game on Thursday, May 13. It ends three weeks of workouts. Action begins at 5:30 p.m. at Lion Memorial Stadium.

The 60-to-90 minute-controlled scrimmage and exhibition is free to the public according to Athletic Director Don Drake, though masks should be worn.

The Lions varsity will usher in a new starting quarterback this year in junior-to-be Jackson Gilkey. A 6’3 Wisconsin native, he has multiple skills, which were on display during 2020.

Ennis targets quick start vs. Royse City, Thurs.

Inconsistent play by a young Ennis softball team reared its head again in a 6-3 defeat at the hands of last place Waco University. The Lady Lions, who outhit the Trojans, 9-6, got off to a miserable start.

Waco U collected all six of their hits in the first two innings to build a 6-1 lead. The Lady Lions also made three costly errors and didn’t appear focused until the third frame, and still struggled to hit with runners on base. It was only the second district win this year for the Trojans, whom Ennis edged at home last month, 6-3.
