ERMC reopens Bluebonnet Cafe

After a year of limited services, the Bluebonnet Café at Ennis Regional Medical Center reopened this week for breakfast and lunch for visitors and non-patients.

“While COVID-19 prompted us to close to outside customers last spring,” said Monique Garza, the dietary director. Just over a year later, on Monday (April 12), the café began serving to those outside of their campus at the corner of 2201 W. Lampasas and Hwy 287.

Journalism team makes headlines

Palmer High School sent their student journalism team to East Texas to compete in a University Interscholastic League competition and returned home having swept the field.

While the New York Times and Washington Post may be safe for now, the skills the Bulldog media team displayed will surely benefit them in the future.

Life has changed in ways both big and small over the last year. Sokol Hall hosts Covid-19 vaccinations

Last Saturday’s Covid-19 vaccination event at Sokol Hall was a shot in the arm to those who took advantage of the opportunity.

According to Kristi Leal, the administrator of the project, a total 1,297 received the vaccination, with a range in age of 16 as the youngest and 94 the oldest. “Everyone was so grateful and nice and everything went very smoothly,” she said at the end of the day.

Bardwell candidate for Mayor Shannon Spurgeon

Area citizens will soon elect a successor to Mayor Larry Gilbert. May 1 points to new leadership and a new day for Bardwell, a town of approximately 600 people.

Gilbert defeated Shannon Spurgeon two years ago, though she is back in a second bid. Before Gilbert, who was the mayor for two terms in the 1990s, it was J.B. “Junior” Lowery.

Early voting is set for April 19-24 and 26-27, though the actual spring election is set for Saturday, May 1.
