I read with interest the story that ran not long ago in the Ennis News, “The night my house burned.” I was speaking with Ginger Boon about a family I’m researching when she mentioned that a really nice woman named May Deitrich used to come each month to pick up the rent. I am amazed that she remembered the name when it was so long ago that she had lived at the house at 408 N. Dallas St.

Members of the alumni department of Jacksonville College visited Ennis during Bluebonnet Fest to meet with Retha Nunn Bigham who donated archive materials relating to her years with the school’s choir between 1962 and 1964. They had lunch at the Ennis Truck Stop where this image of the party was taken. The ladies are (from left): Brenda Hatley Bateman; Jean Ann Gaylor Galyean; Lexa Wood Adams; and Lu Bearden Wegmet. Bigham is seated. Apart from Bigham who graduated in ‘64, the ladies represent Jacksonville Baptist College classes 1970-1974.

NALC sets May 13 for canned food drive

Ennis will participate in the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) 31st annual national food drive on Saturday, May 13. Nonperishable foods will be collected at mail boxes at area residences when picking up and delivering the mail that day.

EISD Ed. Foundation gives 19 grants

Funding needs and special projects of grant requests, all made by Ennis Independent School District staff, the EISD Education Foundation responded by authorizing nineteen in the form of financial grants.

Dirt Cheap closes doors

Discount retailer Dirt Cheap, with 15 locations in Texas, has announced that 13 of their 15 storefronts in Texas, including Ennis, at 1205 W. Ennis Avenue, are closing for good. The only two stores to remain open are in Euless and Pasadena. Euless is at 1201 W. Airport Frwy (Hwy 183), west of 360 on Hwy 183.
