Building blocks amount to Ferris contender

Ferris is no stranger to winning or to playoff berths. Last year’s 6-4 team witnessed the Yellowjackets overcome an 0-2 start by winning 6-of-7 to reach the post-season. Granted, they lost to Vernon, 27-14, in the bi-district opener, but there were good signs at the end.

The Jackets led 14-8 at intermission and were tied at 14 heading into the fourth. In the defeat the squad was left quite hungry and the core of returners indicate the team could be ready to make some noise this fall.

Ferris, Godley have manageable schedules

Of the five teams in District 4-4A, both Ferris and Godley face a schedule against teams whose combined won-lost record is below .500, though neither is close to having a cakewalk towards an easy season.

The Yellowjackets combined opposition won 49 and lost 57, a .462 percentage, while Godley’s foes are 52-55 and .486. Their six non-district foes reveal a virtual identical path, though the Wildcats play one more game at home. Tuning up for their fourgame league season has Ferris facing a group of teams whose merged records are 28-33 (.459) compared to the Wildcats’ 29-34 (.460).

Experienced cast could contend for crown

All five teams in District 4-4A have 10 or more returning starters, though Ferris leads the lot with 14, seven on offense and defense.

Clemson, ‘Bama take 1-2 in AP poll

Two recent favorites, Clemson and Alabama, are at the top of the just released (July 30) Associated Press football poll, the same position they finished last season. Riding the strong arm of 6’5 freshman quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, the Tigers (15-0) trounced the Tide (14-1), 44-16.

South Carolina’s powerhouse in orange led after one quarter, 14-13, then ran roughshod over the Crimson Tide. Lawrence completed 20-of-32 passes for 347 yards and three TD’s and coach Dabo Swinney’s team defeated Alabama in the championship for the second time in three years.

Oklahoma Favored To Win 5th Straight Big 12 Title

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Oklahoma is the favorite to win another Big 12 football title, according to the conference’s preseason media poll released this month.

The Sooners have won the league the last four years and 12 Big 12 championships overall. Oklahoma also made the College Football Playoff three of the past four seasons.

Texas was picked second by media covering the league. The top two teams will meet in the conference championship game on Dec. 7. The Longhorns lost to the Sooners in the title match-up in 2018.
