High-flying Lion, Grant Gilmore, a 6’0, 180-pound junior guard continues to shine. The top-scorer and a distributor in the passing game, he has sparked Ennis to a best-in-years, 7-2 start. His play keyed a come-from-behind, 75-71, win over Nacagdoches on Thursday.

They return home on Dec. 17 to play West Mesquite.

Ennis boys rally past Nacogdoches, 75-71

Ennis (7-2) bounced back from a 70-66 setback to Waco LaVega on Thursday with a huge rally to stun Nacadoches (4-1), 75-71, at a tournament hosted at Midlothian Heritage.

No. 4 Crawford slays Gladiators, late, 20-13

A costly turnover inside the five-yard line cost No. 12 Italy (10-3) a tying touchdown in the closing minutes of a 20-13 third round loss to No. 4 Crawford (13-0) in Alvarado.

The Pirates, who scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, advance to meet Marlin (10-3) on Dec. 3, in Belton. Italy defeated the Bulldogs, 23-21, earlier in the season. They have won seven straight, including a 52-36 playoff win last Friday, to earn a shot at Crawford.

Ennis, now 6-1, dunks Dragons, 78-58

Rolling to their sixth consecutive dubya in the win column, Ennis snuffed out Seagoville, 78-58, on Tuesday at the Ensign Gym. Torching the nets for 30 second quarter points, the Lions took a 44-25 lead at the half, and traded scores the rest of the night. The second half saw a number of highlight reel type of plays.

King, Pace lift Lady Lions, 62-58

Senior guard Riley Pace returned to the lineup and made a huge impact Tuesday in an Ennis road victory, 62-58, over Class 6A Grand Prairie. She scored a critical basket on an inbounds play to give the Lady Lions a 58-56 lead in the final minute, and then netted two free throws with five seconds on the clock to ice the game.

Unranked Mansfield Timberview has Ennis’ number. Friday at Lumpkins Stadium the Wolves dominated the Lions in a 42-21 rout that ended any dream of a deep playoff run for the locals and sent Timberview to the third round where they’ll meet No. 1 Aledo (12-0).

Lady Lions comeback falls short, 35-33

A strong rally in the final minutes of a home game on Tuesday came up just short of Fort Worth Eastern Hills, 35-33, to drop the Ennis Lady Lions to 1-3 on the season.

Turnovers and a miserable night at the foul line cost the hosts. HC David Kilpatrick credited his team’s effort to the final buzzer, especially their man-to-man defense as well as full-court pressure. The hustle created a number of scoring opportunities.

Ferris falls to fourth quarter bombs

Ferris closed out the 2021 season with a tough, Class 4A, Bi-District playoff to Sunnyvale, 41-27, last Friday at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

Going head-to-head for three-quarters before a fourth quarter swoon wasn’t new to the Yellowjackets. Their big-play offense kept them in the game in which they trailed, 17-14, entering the final period.

Senior Emily Gilstrap, shown here setting up Ja’Mya Williams for a kill, led the team in assists and service aces, not to mention leadership. She was named to the All-State Academic Team, the pinnacle for athletes.

Already spending numerous hours on the practice court, at tournaments as well as approximately 35 home and road matches, she maintained a very high GPA, well over 3.5.
