Senior linebacker Brayden Gardener opened the game with a safety and added another score to start the second quarter to propel No. 4 ranked Ennis (5-0) to a 47-14 pasting of still winless Sulphur Springs (0-5).

The Lions, now 2-0 in District 8-5A, breezed to five offensive touchdowns in taking a 44-0 lead at the half. With a running clock in the second half, the all-maroon clad hosts coasted to a victorious homecoming.

Ennis cross country rebuilding with promise

Ennis Cross Country is experiencing a youth movement at all levels of varsity, junior varsity and especially at the junior high level thanks to the energy of Coach Jada Cox. Overall, veteran Lonnie Redning and Tori Lenz have a young, talented cast gaining experience while earning their winged heels.

Athens off to 4-0 start

A swarming defense and a potent offense have combined to lead Class 4A Athens to a 4-0 start this season. Under offensive minded HC Zach Harrell, the Hornets are scoring at a 41.2 points per game clip while a feisty defensive unit is allowing just 7.0 ppg.

Following a 4-6 mark in 2020, including an 0-6 ledger in District 9-4A, DCTF picked the Swarm to finish sixth in the seven-team league this year. Harrell, with 11 starters returning, six on offense, has crafted a cohesive team into a confident one that looks to make more than pre-district buzz.

Ca'Terrin T.T. Cox

An all-district high-hurdler in track, senior WR T.T. Cox broke free on an 80-yard TD sprint against Greenville (shown above) last week. The score gave Team Maroon a 14-0 lead with 6:27 left in the first half. He amassed 100 yards on seven carries by intermission. A week prior it was his two-point reception from QB Jackson Gilkey that defeated Waxahachie, 22-21, in overtime.

CAT SCRATCH FEVER, BLANK G'VILLE

What became a methodical take-down of an overmatched team became a 28-0 victory by No. 6 Ennis over Greenville at a well-attended Cotton Ford Stadium on Friday night.

The visiting Lions, now 4-0, had little trouble in dispatching the hosts, who dropped to 1-3. It was the District 8-5A opener for both teams, though only Ennis showed much of a pulse. Greenville managed only three first downs in the first half and four after recess. Playing possum for all but one possession, the Red Cats gave little evidence of the offense they had in their 59-0 win a week ago over Ranchview.

Big 5 VB teams, some hot, some not

When you’re hot, you’re hot, and when you’re not, you’re not - was a popular song in the 1970’s, yet it’s true. Early in their respective district volleyball seasons, three of the area’s Big 5 teams are en fuego while two others are looking for a spark.

Recovering from two weeks of cancelled matches, Italy claimed wins in their first two District 15-2A encounters, pounding Kopperl, 3-0; 25-8; 25-8; 25-10, and then bested Covington, 3-1; 25-18, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-10.

Athlete of the Week - Jace Berry

Versatile in the clutch, junior WR and Defensive Back Jace Berry, stepped in and stepped up when Ennis needed him most.

The 5’11, 190-pounder spelled T.T. Cox in the backfield in the second half, gaining 51 yards on nine carries. Berry was also ripe for two receptions and 23 yards.
