Working his way up, the 6’4 wide receiver will play his senior season this fall at NCAA Division II Texas A&M University at Kingsville. Jonathan Mackey, who caught 28 passes as a senior at Ennis under HC Jack Alvarez, which brought All-District honors, began at Kilgore College in East Texas. He started and then moved to Emporia State (D2) in Kansas, where he did similarly.

Collins transfers to Lake Erie College

Former Ennis all-state offensive lineman Deven Collins has transferred to Lake Erie College, an NCAA Division II school 28 miles east of Cleveland in the town of Painesville (pop. 28,500).

At 6’2, 330-pounds, he is listed as a redshirtjunior with two years of eligibility remaining. His first two years were at UT-Pan American Basin after his freshman year at Cisco College (Juco), both location in Texas.

Collin Drake had to have several things move into place when he transferred from Class 6A McKinney Boyd to Ennis when his dad accepted an offer to become the Athletic Director at Class 5A Ennis. The first two were the opportunity to compete for the starting job, where Dyllan Santos, who was the starter as a junior, was the heir apparent.

Maile Deutsch named National Player of the Year

One of the most accomplished athletes from Ennis just added a major award to the wheelbarrow it will take to haul hardware from her softball career at McPherson College. Maile Deutsch, a former All-District first team slugger for the Lady Lions, put the finishing touches on her four-year career by being named the NAIA’s national player of the year.

Ever since one of her earliest bombs launched in Ennis, the powerladen Maile Deutsch, who is of Hawaiian descent, has had her home runs described by one word. “Krakatoa.” It’s an Indonesian island that was virtually destroyed by numerous volcanic eruptions, and it has been the cry of fans.

Like the ESPN catch-phrase, “that ball has just been voted off the island,” the All-District player jacked her share of unplayable balls and then trotted around the bases.

While the best season in school history came to a premature and sad end, Italy softball appears to be on its way to the top. Facing a three-time state champion in Crawford, the Lady Gladiators suffered a 1-0 defeat in Game Three when the Pirates scored with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Italy softball Head Coach Tina Richards has been at the helm for seven years, all of them winners. Her teams have produced a 211-34 (.861) overall mark and a combined 62-3 (.954) in district action. It’s safe to say she knows a thing or two about the game.

Just moments after the deepest playoff run in Italy High School history, Richards capably handled questions about the team’s just-completed 1-0 loss to Crawford.

“We’re so proud of this team,” she said to reporters. “We were able to fight to the finish and had our chances. We grew as a team and as a family.

Ennis Baseball falls in playoff final to Tigers

It didn’t go as planned for an Ennis baseball team who had won back-to-back Game Threes in the state playoffs. Plus, they had senior pitcher Nick Novy, who was unbeaten all season, starting on the hill. He had won both of the decisive third games against North Forney and Texas High.

Last Saturday’s 1-1 series with District 14-5A rival Corsicana, played in Duncanville, began in the haze of a falling mist. Though it lasted just a half inning, when it lifted the Lions were behind 4-0 and Novy was no longer on the mound.
