Ennis hammers No. 17 Corsicana, 7-0

One day after a tough 2-0 loss at Red Oak, Ennis made well again when they hammered No. 17 stateranked Corsicana at home, 7-0. The booming win against District 14-5A’s first place ballclub threw four teams into a tie for the lead, all with four losses, with one week left in the season.

Ferris has been gearing up for the Class 4A playoffs with by taking 6-of-10 league games down the stretch to solidify their shot at a run in the bidistrict round.

A year after registering a 4-15-1 mark overall and finishing 1-9 in district play, HC Joe West has the Yellow Jackets ready for a first round playoff, possibly with the second or place team from District 9-4A. Ferris is 11-11 overall and 6-5 in District 10-4A. The Swarm trails only No. 15 Midlothian Heritage, who are 18-7-1 and 11-0, and will meet either the second or third place team from District 10-4A.

Inconsistent play by a young Ennis softball team reared its head again in a 6-3 defeat at the hands of last place Waco University. The Lady Lions, who outhit the Trojans, 9-6, got off to a miserable start.

Waco U collected all six of their hits in the first two innings to build a 6-1 lead. The Lady Lions also made three costly errors and didn’t appear focused until the third frame, and still struggled to hit with runners on base. It was only the second district win this year for the Trojans, whom Ennis edged at home last month, 6-3.

Ennis alum shines, earns honor

Former Ennis All-District slugger Maile Deutsch was named the Player of the Week again in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference for McPherson College. The 5’6 senior who hails from Palmer, successfully rapped 12-hits in 13-at bats (.923), walked five times and drove in nine for the NAIA Lady Bulldogs, who went 4-0 during the week.

Avalon boys, girls T&F teams shine

Avalon High School is seldom ever lacking good athletes, evidenced by last week’s stellar performance that placed a handful from both the boys and girls Track & Field teams, with a number advancing to the Regionals. James Cashion coaches the boys. Brandy Goodman coaches the girls. Building for the future, the boys’ best qualifiers featured all under-classmen, while the girls had three seniors lead the way. Senior pitcher and shortstop Hayden Beasley, shown with his family (parents Wesley, Jessica, sister Hanna) when he signed to play baseball at Arlington Baptist University. Beasley has played three varsity seasons for HC Joe Robinson.

“Hayden has been a key part to the success of our baseball program,” said Robinson. “He works hard on the baseball field as well as in the classroom. He is what you look for in a student-athlete in every aspect. I expect him to be successful in college and when his playing days are over.”

Guzman powers Pride to 9-7 win over Corsicana

Ennis bounced back from a 7-4 loss at first place Red Oak on Monday, April 12, to rally past fifth place Corsicana, 9-7, at home the following night. Sophomore pitcher Valerie Guzman struck out six and allowed three earned runs and helped her cause with two hits and drove in three. The split gave the Lady Lions a 6-4 record in District 14-5A and an overall mark of 9-10-1.

Harrell leads Ennis into month-long camp

Ennis started spring football practices last week on the Astroturf at Lion Memorial Stadium. According to Athletic Director Don Drake, beginning April 19 the team will practice Monday, Tuesday and Thursday each week until the spring game on May 13.

The Lions have produced a combined 21-3 record over the past two years and will return a solid core this fall despite a number of losses due to graduation. They spent the entire 2020 season ranked No. 1 in the state before an early, second-round exit in the playoffs. Forecasters would do well not to sell this team short.

Lady Bulldogs gearing-up for big games

Palmer girls softball enters the final weeks of the season with a tall order in terms of their opposition, or a great opportunity to prove their mettle while clinching a playoff berth.

HC Korey Plough and the Lady Bulldogs, 12-6 overall and 6-5 in District 18-3A, have dates with the two teams above them in the standings, No. 18 ranked Malakoff (19-3) and Mildred (17-3-1). The two games give the K-9’s a chance to move up and secure a playoff berth. They host Scurry-Rosser at home at 5:30 p.m. on Tues., Apr. 20 before going to Mildred on Apr. 23 at 6 p.m.
