Lions rally to win, 10-4, even series

Up from the depths in a 3-0 deficit in Game Two at South Grand Prairie, Ennis (20-14-2) came fighting back to shush Corsicana (27-10) in a 10-4 verdict to even the Class 5A Regional Quarterfinals on Friday.

Ennis moved to within one win of advancing to the third round, the deepest they have gone in the past 25 years, when they rallied from a 7-2 deficit to hand Texas High School an 11-8 defeat at home on Thursday. The triumph was the first in a best-of-three series against the team from Texarkana, and it was played in Ennis before a raucous crowd.

Pressure baseball is great theatre. It can also boost the sale of Rolaids.

Ennis, who had a shot at the District 14-5A title a week ago, then lost two games, both after taking a lead into the sixth inning, and slid to fourth place. It sent the Lions (15-11-2) into a best-of-three playoff series against No. 15 state-ranked North Forney (28-4) this weekend.

Ennis catcher Luke Regas had a huge game against North Forney on Thursday in the playoffs. He doubled in his first two trips to the plate, both times to RCF, and drove in Jeremiah Sanchez twice for a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning. In the photo above he exults after sliding in safely in the fourth.

Regas made a critical tag-out at the plate - on a throw from CF Ashton Ehly, to protect the 3-1 lead and to end the inning. He hit .309 during the regular season.

Jackets buzzing, prep for baseball playoffs

Ferris roared back from a 5-1 hole to edge Carrollton Ranchview, on Monday, 6-5, to complete a four-game series sweep of the Wolves. The home triumph wrapped up the Yellow Jackets regular season with a 12-11 overall mark while taking second in District 10-4A at 7-5.

HC Joe West’s Black and Orange head into the playoffs this week where they will likely face District 10-4A third place team, Anna (18-6), in a one-game or best-of-three series. Both teams have produced a 7-3 ledger in their last 10 games.

Left-hander Colton Daniell and RHP Fito Mendez combined to hold University High School to three hits and one run and Aidan Castillo drove in a run and then scored the game-winner in a 2-1 Ennis victory on Tuesday in Waco. The win moved the Lions to 8-4 in District 14-5A and into a first-place tie with Corsicana (21-8) heading into the final weekend.

Ferris has been gearing up for the Class 4A playoffs with by taking 6-of-10 league games down the stretch to solidify their shot at a run in the bidistrict round.

A year after registering a 4-15-1 mark overall and finishing 1-9 in district play, HC Joe West has the Yellow Jackets ready for a first round playoff, possibly with the second or place team from District 9-4A. Ferris is 11-11 overall and 6-5 in District 10-4A. The Swarm trails only No. 15 Midlothian Heritage, who are 18-7-1 and 11-0, and will meet either the second or third place team from District 10-4A.

Ennis hammers No. 17 Corsicana, 7-0

One day after a tough 2-0 loss at Red Oak, Ennis made well again when they hammered No. 17 stateranked Corsicana at home, 7-0. The booming win against District 14-5A’s first place ballclub threw four teams into a tie for the lead, all with four losses, with one week left in the season.

Daniell, Sanchez power Lions to 10-0 win

Hosting Mansfield Summit in a non-district game last Saturday, April 3, turned a clash of playoff contenders into a one-sided game in which Ennis flattened the ‘Cats in a 10-0 drubbing.

The Jaguars, 9-12, who led District 8-5A just over a week ago, have now dropped four-in-a-row overall and slipped to 3-3 in their league.
