Former Ferris, Ennis QB, is now touted WR

Former Ferris quarterback and Ennis JV QB Dylan Wright transferred to the University of Minnesota in January. Ranked as the No. 12 WR in the nation coming out of high school, he chose Texas A&M over a number of major universities, including Minnesota.

He played in eight games with the Aggies, three in 2019 before redshirting, and five in 2020.

Pronounced DAY-lon, he is listed as a redshirt sophomore at 6’3, 215-pounds with the Gophers. His jersey number is No. 16. Minnesota hosts Ohio State on Thursday, Sept. 2.

No. 7 Lions begin pre-season practices

No. 7 ranked Ennis will open preseason camp with three morning practices before switching to the afternoons once school began on Thursday, Aug. 12.

Head Coach Sam Harrell embarks on the fourth year since his return of an eight-year health-induced break. The Lions have had seasons of 5-5, 12-2 and 9-1 during his first three years back.

Morning practices, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, begin at 7:00 a.m. with a two-hour stint until approximately 9:30 a.m. Harrell said practices then shift to their regular, afterschool schedule at about 4:00 p.m.

Hot on the newsstands is the 2021 edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, considered the Sports Bible on college and prep-football, which was released a week ago. The publication has over 1,400 previews on public and private schools with predictions on every district race. Check Walmart, HEB and drug stores.

Drake announces when ticket sales begin

No. 7 ranked Ennis will soon make available season ticket sales according to Athletic Director Don Drake. Renewals for current season ticket holders will start on July 19 and run through August 6.

Fans should access renewals online through GoFan, the Lions online ticket provider or purchase them in person at the Ennis athletic office on Lake Bardwell Drive. Drake told The Ennis News that GoFan will be emailing all current season ticket holders on the 19th to notify them that renewals have begun. Watch for postcards reminders in the mail.

West tops East, 10-3, in baseball All-Stars

Area baseball players united for the cause of Ellis County on Thursday night at Paul Richards Park in Waxahachie. Representing every public and private school in a county of 180,000 people, it was only fitting the game was played at the old school grass field that was once used for spring training by the White Sox and others.

The West took advantage of hits in the gaps and throwing errors to build a 6-1 lead through four innings. They had a 7-6 edge in hits at the time, but parlayed theirs into runs. They coasted to a 10-3 win on a hot, muggy and buggy night.

Ennis opens at No. 7 in preseason

A year after starting the season at the top of the pre-season rankings, Ennis begins the 2021 campaign at No. 7. The Lions, 9-1 in 2020, easily maintained their No. 1 spot through the regular season and one round of the playoffs before getting eliminated by Mansfield Timberview, 42-28.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, which will hit newsstands in two weeks, released their recognized rankings in each of the different state classifications. The largest is Class 6A’s Division I, followed by Div. II. Class 5A’s biggest schools compete in Div. I, while Ennis is in Div. II.

Baseball Lions place three among District diamonds

One of the most productive baseball seasons in Ennis school history saw the Lions advance to the third round of the Class 5A state playoffs and to within one win of reaching regional semifinals. Following the end of the season the team reaped their rewards when District 14-5A released the All-District awards.

Finishing 20-15-2 overall, which included a 5-4 mark in the playoffs, HC Kellen Monreal had three players selected to the First Team or be selected among the District Superlatives.

Willingham honored with Broyles Award

Texas fans are familiar with the late Arkansas HC Frank Broyles. His Razorbacks defeated No. 1 Texas in Austin in 1964, a favor returned in 1969 when the Longhorns rallied to defeat the ‘Hogs, 15-14, in a game dubbed the Game of the Century.

Texas fans are familiar with the late Arkansas HC Frank Broyles. His Razorbacks defeated No. 1 Texas in Austin in 1964, a favor returned in 1969 when the Longhorns rallied to defeat the ‘Hogs, 15-14, in a game dubbed the Game of the Century.

Described as the man who put Arkansas on the map for his 1958-1976 stint, which included the national championship in 1964, his name is now placed on awards for the top assistant coaches in college and high school.
