New-look Lions look for strong out of gate

Following a pandemic shortened 2020 season in which Ennis posted a 5-5-1 record, the Lions are eager to play a normal campaign, or as close as possible. Head Coach Kellen Monreal begins his third year and has a new-look squad he is confident will contend for a playoff berth in the seven team District 14-5A. Asked by the Ennis News who are the team to beat in the league, Monreal said it will once again be one of the state’s best districts.

It came, it went and no one answered the door. But it sure did knock a number of times.

A wild Saturday in which fifth place Red Oak defeated second place Waco University, lifting the Hawks into a three-way tie for third with Ennis and Joshua, ended in drama and celebration.

Ennis junior pitcher Aubree Lalani (11) fires a pitch during the early innings on Tuesday at Midlothian. The Lady Lions held a 3-2 lead on the strength of a monster HR by Mattie Beakley in the first and solid work in the circle by Lalani. They went on to lose, but defeated Keller on Friday, 8-6.

Ennis will host Waxahachie on Friday, March 5, at 7 p.m.

Blizzard fouls up playoff schedule for Big 5

Coaches like things as orderly as rows of corn. The past week has seen the weather mess up the best made plans, enough to wipe out games through Friday, Feb. 19. The University Interscholastic League stepped in to buy a few days, though it only serves as putting a lid on a blender.

Sophomore Grant Gilmore led Ennis to an 88-49 blowout of Cleburne last week. The 5’11 guard poured in a team-high 16 points, nine in the second half, as the Lions finished third in the district with a 7-5 record.

Lions topple Red Oak on the road, 56-46

After dropping three of four District 14-5A basketball games, Ennis bounced back to defeat Red Oak, 56-46, on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 2. The Lions entered the game in fifth place, trailing both Joshua and the Hawks.

As confident as holding four aces through nine games, No. 1 ranked Ennis (9-0) was primed until dealt a bad-hand at Midlothian in a second round playoff game. Two calls allowed Old Man Momentum to change hands and it was enough to turn Timberview into an upset winner over the team picked by most to win their sixth crown.

Joshua rallies, holds on 51-49, sweeps Ennis

In a hard-fought game where scoring runs were traded, visiting Joshua overcame an eight-point deficit and hung on to win, 51-49, over Ennis on Tuesday night. The Lions came up short for the third time in four District 14-5A games to drop to 4-4. They are tied with Red Oak in fourth place, both with four games to play.

Ennis falls at Midlo, 57-38

Avenging a loss at Ennis last month, Midlothian (15-5) exacted a measure of revenge with a 57-38 retribution. The Panthers grabbed a quick 16-7 lead in the first quarter and never lost the upper hand. They placed four players in double figures and made the Lions pay for every foul by converting 19-of-24 free throws that prevented any thought of a comeback.

Ennis drew to within 29-22 at the half, but a 15-7 third quarter by the hosts deep-sixed the Lions.
