Harrell leads Ennis into month-long camp

Ennis started spring football practices last week on the Astroturf at Lion Memorial Stadium. According to Athletic Director Don Drake, beginning April 19 the team will practice Monday, Tuesday and Thursday each week until the spring game on May 13.

The Lions have produced a combined 21-3 record over the past two years and will return a solid core this fall despite a number of losses due to graduation. They spent the entire 2020 season ranked No. 1 in the state before an early, second-round exit in the playoffs. Forecasters would do well not to sell this team short.

Spring is in the air, and for the first time in a year, residents actually have a reason to get outside. The annual Bluebonnet Trails Festival is upon us, and taking center stage are the Texas state flowers. And aren’t they standing magnificent and tall?

Along roadsides and meadows, sometimes accented with Indian Paintbrush, the Bluebonnet is cause for more ooh and ahhs since the most recent firework show. Getting out and touring the area has brought plenty of encouragement to Texans.

David Edward “Eddie” Cervantes, 55, of Ennis, Texas, passed away on April 10, 2021 in Dallas, Texas.

David was born to Jesse and Evila Cervantes on June 1, 1965. Cervantes graduated from Ennis High School in 1983 and attended college at Wyoming Tech to become an automotive technician. His love for cars was a hobby that became a career, with over 30 years in the automotive technology industry. When he wasn’t working, Cervantes would spend his time watching football, NASCAR, golf, and his son, Justin, drag race with Cervantes Racing.

Journalism team makes headlines

Palmer High School sent their student journalism team to East Texas to compete in a University Interscholastic League competition and returned home having swept the field.

While the New York Times and Washington Post may be safe for now, the skills the Bulldog media team displayed will surely benefit them in the future.

Citizens of Ennis will have the opportunity to voice their choice in mayoral leadership on Saturday, May 1, when Trevor Wilhoite challenges the incumbent, Angie Juenemann.

Both candidates were invited to answer a list of nearly twenty questions, allowing readers the opportunity to be better informed. Wilhoite is a life-long resident of the Bluebonnet City while Juenemann is running for a third term in office as mayor.

Elizabeth Ann Simpson Nicks

Elizabeth Ann Simpson Nicks was born in Ennis, Texas, on May 11, 1943, and died in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 2, 2021. Ann has gone to be with her Savior Jesus Christ after a twenty-one-year battle with multiple sclerosis.

She was preceded in death by her parents Shirley and Oleta Simpson, brother Don Simpson, and grandson Austin Nicks.

Donald Joe Watson

Donald Joe Watson passed from this life on April 9, 2021, at the age of 60, after fighting a battle with lung cancer for two years. He was at his home, surrounded by family and friends.

He was born June 24, 1960, in Comanche, Texas, to Donald Lee Watson and Melba Yvonne (Sue) Benson. Donald Joe grew up in Rising Star, Texas. After graduation, Donald Joe made his way to Ennis, Texas, where he worked at Sterilite Corp for over 14 years.

ERMC reopens Bluebonnet Cafe

After a year of limited services, the Bluebonnet Café at Ennis Regional Medical Center reopened this week for breakfast and lunch for visitors and non-patients.

“While COVID-19 prompted us to close to outside customers last spring,” said Monique Garza, the dietary director. Just over a year later, on Monday (April 12), the café began serving to those outside of their campus at the corner of 2201 W. Lampasas and Hwy 287.

Bluebonnet Spirit Shop open to the public

Just opened, the appropriately named Bluebonnet Spirit Shop is just in time for Ennis residents and visitors to start shopping for unique items including the official Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival shirt.

The store is designated a 501 (c) (3) non-profit by the city. Funds from sales are designated towards future festivals and events downtown. Director of Communications and Marketing, Ashley Colunga, said things like constructing the Autumn Hay Maze and the winter’s snow toboggan hill at the North Plaza will benefit.
