Jean Snedden, born Doris Jean Allen, on September 1, 1927, in Pampa, Texas, passed away January 9, 2021, in Tyler, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Grant Lincoln Snedden Jr. (“G. L.” or “Jake”) and her brother, Harry Lyle Allen, of Spring.

She is survived by her sister, Joann Baker; sons: Robert and wife, Britta, and Scott and wife, Nancy; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Joe E. Landsfeld

Joe E. Landsfeld, 78, passed away in Ennis, Texas on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.

Joe was born on September 7, 1942, to Joe J. and Agnes (Holy) Landsfeld in Ennis, Texas. Joe grew up in Ennis and graduated from S. John High School in 1960. He went on to attend Draughons Business College specializing in computers. On June 29, 1963 he married his sweetheart Janice Skrivanek and they made their home in Ennis.

Joe worked for Southland Life for two years as a computer programmer and for Wright Titus Agency for forty-three years as the head of their computer department.

Don’t like the idea of Big Government looking over your shoulder with along list that demonizes anyone who objects to their control? Then Wednesday’s bulletin by the Department of Homeland Security should signal all Conservatives to prepare for more.

Both the DHS terrorism announcement as well as Mass Media’s interpretation of said bulletin is like Elmer Fudd’s warning, “I’m hunting wabbit.” You should probably consider his forerunner words as well, “Be vewy, vewy quiet.” Only the new administration’s prepared statement was no cartoon funny.

Science Fiction or Science Future

Soon after I first began to read, I devoured every science fiction book I could. My favorite author was E. E. “Doc” Smith. His seven-book Lensman Series is the most imaginative, thrilling, and engaging material in the sci-fi genre I’ve had the pleasure of reading.

Alongside the written word, I also listened to “Dimension X” and “Flash Gordon” serials via our old style Philco radio. You might say my body was on Earth, but my mind was far out in the deep reaches of space.

Alma’s BBQ leads four new eateries set to open

Alma’s Smokehouse BBQ and owners Jesse and Susan Martinez, as well as partners John and Amelia Valdez, lifelong Ennis citizens, already have one popular spot, a haven for those with a hankering for barbecue. It is located on the Hwy 287 service road across from Love’s Travel Stop.

They plan to kick-start a second location, on 200 S. Kaufman St., across from Bella Italia, in March. The same Mesquite pit-smoked, bodacious BBQ, and all of their fix-in’s and a dessert packed deli, is in the final stages before their doors swing open.

Perez hits high note as All-State clarinet player

In recent years the Ennis Marching Band has numbered about 200 members, and collectively, the group continues to rock the state at the highest degree of performance.

Individually the band had a number of instrumentalists who earned All-Region status, and then came an even higher stratosphere, All-State. Ennis Band Director Gary Goodwin, pointed out that All-Staters are in the top one-percent of high school band students in Texas.

City shows tangible love

As necessity is the mother of invention, then the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic a year created needs in Ennis the community rallied to meet.

The advent of layoffs and then business, home and school closures were just the beginning. City leadership berthed a response by starting the Bluebonnet Call Center (BBCC) in March as a resource hub and connection point between Ennis and its community members. Those with needs had a hope that help was close-by, while those who knew of people struggling could point them in the right direction.

In what surely has to be a labor of love, a local couple in Bardwell has taken it upon themselves to rescue animals who have gone missing, and they do it free of charge.

Having grown up in East Texas, Tammy Dupal and her Austrian husband, Andreas, have developed a mission of reuniting pet owners with their lost critters, most of them dogs, cats, owls and hawks. Vocationally, Andreas installs automated warehouse systems, though its Tammy who is a bit of a pet whisperer.

Elvis in Ennis?

Well, not quite. But his music and public image thoroughly upset a group of educators and parents of teenagers at a PTA conference here in town, according to a 1956 Associated Press report. All agreed it was the “desire to conform” that was causing teens to “join the squealing throng of Elvis admirers.” The issue was actually addressed as a serious mental health concern for Ennis high schoolers.
