Roger Maise murder case

The investigation into the Aug. 20 shooting death of a local 19-year old man at Roger Maise Park, 900 E. Martin Luther King Drive, is continuing, says Hopson. Progress has been made but not enough to warrant any arrests. “We are still following leads in the case,” he said. Considered an attempted robbery, it took place at 4:30 p.m. at the park located across from Fire Station No. 2.

Turning the lights down

Former Mayor Russell Thomas’s forbear Mayor E.M. Thomas, was also a tireless citizens’ advocate. In August 1920, the mayor vowed to fight a rate increase proposed by Texas Power & Light. Thomas ordered the company to “discontinue all street lights except in the White Way downtown.” He also requested the public to ease service “as much as possible to the extent of 100 percent.”

Pamela Spiller King, 63, of Giddings, Texas, was born on June 17, 1957, in Bay City, Texas, and passed away on Nov. 9, 2020, in Giddings, Texas.

Viewing was held on Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at Bethel St. Paul United Baptist Church, in Giddings, Texas.

Funeral service was held on Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, at 11 a.m., also at Bethel St. Paul United Baptist Church.

Burial followed at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.

Victor Mendieta Rios

Victor Mendieta Rios, 78, of Ennis, Texas, passed away Friday, October 30, 2020, at the Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Dallas. He was born on May 26, 1942, in Sinton, Texas, to Porfirio Rios and Lucia Mendieta.

He is survived by his two daughters: Maria A. (Jose L.) Rios-Vega, FL, and Maria T. (Lee H.) Rios-Menke, OH; and two sons: Roberto V. Rios, OH, and David Rios, Sinton, TX.

He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two brothers: Regino (Eva) Rios and Mike (Elva) Rios, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Those clamoring for new places to eat and retail sites to shop, be reminded there are new ones opening their doors in Ennis, with more to come. It behooves our residents to support them as they arrive, whether chain stores and eateries, or locals who have goods to offer.

Of course, it’s of interest to read social media buzz, which costs nothing, and see the number of questions and comments from non-subscribers of The Ennis News, who would already know about what’s coming if they purchased a paper at a news-rack for a dollar.

Ranked No. 1 in the state among Class 5A teams, Ennis will play its most important game of the season so far next Thursday, Nov. 19, when they take on unbeaten North Forney at City Bank Stadium (8,894 cap.).

Provided both teams won their games on Nov. 13, the Lions will carry a 6-0 mark into the game against the Falcons, 7-0. An early kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The game will be aired on YouTube free of charge at https://youtu.be/ XrzDBXcUSkA. Play-by-play and color commentary will be provided on the broadcast.
