Dressed in holiday style

The tradition where Texas House members each select a constituent to decorate an ornament to highlight a special aspect of their district, HD-10 State Representative Brian Harrison chose Claire Conn, the owner of The Mosaic Hideaway (1507 W. Main St near N. Grand and Getzendaner Park) in Waxahachie. She crafted an ornament that wonderfully captures Waxahachie’s crape myrtle tree.

Local bucketeers open district play this week

Big 5 teams in Eastern Ellis County are tipping-off the start of the second half of their varsity basketball season this week with games in their respective districts.

For Palmer, they have 14 district games. Ennis, Ferris, Italy and Avalon have 12. That translates into 6 or 7 home contests. Now is the time, through early February, to catch your local hoopsters in action.

Ellzey lauds GAF-Ennis, Red Oak Qarbon

During his visit home two weeks ago, first-year Congressman Jake Ellzey, of Midlothian, made several appearances to his constituents in Ellis County, including to Ennis, Red Oak as well as to Corsicana in Navarro County.

He managed to get free from what he described as a “hectic voting schedule in DC” to monitor and discuss needs within District 6. Besides a few opportunities to speak, he served as the Grand Marshall in Corsicana’s Christmas parade. He visited two area plants and raved about them both, GAF-Ennis and Qarbon Aerospace in Red Oak.

Eastern Ellis County schools returning to class

Area school districts are resuming classes following the Christmas break. Parents are urged to check their respective school website or call the main offices as first-day back varies at Ennis, Ferris, Palmer, Italy and Avalon. Drivers should be alerted to the presence of students and buses at the start of each day.

EISD campuses begin earlier than some others. According to Superintendent Jay Tullos, faculty and staff commence regular hours on Monday, Jan. 3, while students report on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

A perfect time to begin brand new

The New Year is here and I’m excited to see what 2022 has for us! My hope is this coming year will be a season of abundance not just with material prosperity and success, but of love, health, and spiritual awareness. As we plant seeds of faith, may we have the patience and expectation to witness the harvest of God’s blessings. One of my personal resolutions is to be more generous and joyful even when things are not going well. I’m reminded of a quote by Mother Teresa who said, “Not all of us can do great things, but we can all do small things with great love.”

Dixie Lee Dent

Dixie Lee Dent, the widow of Fred Duane Dent, Executive of the family owned Ennis Transportation Company, peacefully passed away on November 23, 2021.

Dixie Lee, the youngest of six children, was born Dixie Lee Crable on November 25,1935 in Memphis, Tennessee to parents William Everett Crable (1893- 1973) born in Omaha, Douglas county, Nebraska, and Anna Latzy Crable (1901-1977) born in West Homestead, Allegheny Pennsylvania.
