Earnestine Dean English, 76, passed away on June 13, 2021.

Visitation was held on Friday, June 18, 2021, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Eternal Rest Funeral Home Chapel Ennis, 215 N. Dallas St., Ennis, Texas 75119.

Funeral service was held on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at 11 a.m., at Bright Morning Star Baptist Church, 1007 Daffan Ave., Ennis.

Interment will follow in Ennis Memorial Cemetery.

Paul Willingham honored with Broyles Award

Texas fans are familiar with the late Arkansas HC Frank Broyles. His Razorbacks defeated No. 1 Texas in Austin in 1964, a favor returned in 1969 when the Longhorns rallied to defeat the ‘Hogs, 15-14, in a game dubbed the Game of the Century.

Described as the man who put Arkansas on the map for his 1958-1976 stint, which included the national championship in 1964, his name is now placed on awards for the top assistant coaches in college and high school.

Hot spots for wrecks in Ennis

Ennis area roads can lead to beautiful Bluebonnet Trails or deadly endings. Sunday’s tragic accident on U.S. Route 287 by the Texas Motorplex has seen its share of mishaps over the years, in fact, Hwy 287 from I-45 to Reagor Springs has had a huge number of wrecks.

A research of the Boyce Road crossing at 287, where the brunt of visitors and race car drivers enter the gates at the Motorplex, has had at least four crashes that resulted in at least four deaths over the last decade. Why the killer smash-ups? Is anything being done?

Summertime Blues on Main Street

After a year off due to Covid, Blues on Main returned downtown for their 11th year. Having changed names and locations while building the event, the unity encourager began in 2009 at the old park by the swimming pool, then relocated to Roger Maise Park, to Veteran’s Memorial Park and in recent years, to downtown on Main Street.

GOP moves meetings to Ennis

Registered Republican voters in the area can now attend the public monthly meetings of the Grand Old Party (GOP) at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Champions Club in Ennis. The facility has seating for 800 and is located at the Texas Motorplex, 7500 US-287 at Boyce Road. The move will provide more space and is more convenience for Eastern Ellis County residents.

Juneteenth

My son called me on Friday to congratulate me that from now on, my birthday, June 19, will be a federal holiday. I told him to enjoy the day off but still go ahead with whatever plans he may have had for sending me a gift. He was not amused.

Now in my eighth year in Ennis, the subject of Juneteenth has often filled this space, usually in a historical point of view.

Most adults know what the Golden Rule is and we’re pretty sure what it means. Whether we practice it is another matter. We are likely to recognize it in its simplest of forms. The point of this editorial is an opportunity to display the Golden Rule that is overlooked to the point we will lie to keep from serving someone in need.

City boosting expansion, rehabbing of two parks

Ennis introduced substantial improvements at multiple city parks during Tuesday night’s City Commission meeting at the Welcome Center.

Final plans are yet to be approved, but work at Rotary Park and at Roger Maise Park look to get started this year. Director of Parks, Paul Liska discussed the big picture and presented both designs and artist renderings at the meeting, which also included a breakdown of key additions at both locations as well as projected costs.

Honor thy father

When the Lottie Moon Offering was taken each year at our church, my father stood behind the back pew in the large sanctuary, which accommodated more than 200 people, while various women’s circles and youth organizations voiced their individual totals in an orderly process.

At the end of all the chalkboard notations, the chairman of the deacons would shade his eyes, and from the front of the auditorium, look toward the back of the church toward my father and say, “Ed?”

And my father would say, “Two thousand, seven hundred and 56 dollars, and 34 cents.”
