Young girl’s letters spread joy

An 8-year-old local girl is making the most of quarantine restrictions by bringing happiness to area residents with her homemade greetings cards, pictures and letters.

Addressed to senior citizens in area nursing homes who are missing their families during the health crisis, the letters and pictures have reached almost a hundred people so far.

Some of the best news for Ennis in the past two decades was the announced decision in February that Freshpet, Inc., headquartered in Secaucus, NJ and with a major plant in Lehigh Valley (Bethlehem), PA, chose Ennis as the site for its newest expansion. The good news will bring a national leader in pet food and treats, made in the USA with all-natural chicken or beef as the No. 1 ingredient, as well as 400 jobs to the area.

People in service industries were the first to lose their jobs, 25 million in the United States, and look to be among the first to be called back.

Jimmy Ray Mikel, 64, passed away in DeSoto, Texas on Saturday, April 25, 2020.

Jimmy was born on December 25, 1955 to Louis S. and Mary (Slovak) Mikel in Ennis, Texas. Jimmy grew up in Ennis and graduated from Ennis High School in 1974.

Jimmy worked as an electrician. He was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church and the American Legion. He loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed crossword puzzles. His family was the joy of his life.

Amazing, isn’t it? Waiting in line makes all kind of ideas come to mind… besides finding out what the hold-up is up front and exhibiting some couponrage on the person who forgot to show them until their $300 grocery receipt was done.

The past two months of quarantine has my mind bulging at the crazies. The things I have learned, thought about and pondered are worthy of either the Nobel Peace Prize or a padded cell. How about you?

For starters, Texas Governor Greg Abbott stay of quarantine was a move in the right direction.

Those who are against the reopening the economy can find solace in the lowlevel of work that can be done during the coronavirus pandemic. Others, who want their jobs back, see the decree as not nearly enough, but at least the standstill is beginning to move.

Translation, Abbott’s presser from Austin on Monday was a compromise.
