Ennis, Rice marching bands among entrants

A traditional kickoff for the Christmas season is the annual Lights of Ennis (LOE) parade downtown. This year’s venue will feature 70 entries including the marching bands from Ennis and Rice High Schools, who are directed by Gary Goodwin and Kerry Hughes respectively. The parade will wind through downtown beginning at 7 p.m.

Chamber of Commerce President Jeanette Patak says this year’s parade is about the same size as last year’s, but she added the parade has been growing in size every year.

A message released by the Texas Department of Public Safety reminds Texans to stay vigilant over the holidays about suspicious activities. Providing advance warning to law enforcement can mean the difference between stopping a mass violent event or having the event occur.

It is important to report any suspicious activity or behavior to law enforcement so they can intervene and evaluate the situation.

Successful season for Historical Society

ORGANIZATIONS

The Ennis Historical Society, formerly Ennis Heritage Society, reports a successful season since its reboot this year. In addition to a popular field trip enjoyed by members to Navarro College’s Pearce Museum in Corsicana, the group has just received sustaining funds from a benefactor who has regularly backed the organization’s project to digitally scan historical issues of the Ennis Daily News for the University of North Texas’ Portal to Texas History.

Last Friday at the Ford Center at The Star, which serves as the World Headquarters for the Dallas Cowboys, one of several high school playoff football games took place inside the 12,000 seat complex. For the second time in two years the Ennis Lions were playing. This week makes a third.

After a less than wild turnout at home games this season, Lion Nation was back. They were impressive in numbers and in volume. With just over half of its 10,000 seats at home being occupied this fall, an enthusiastic throng made its way 62 miles north.

Black Friday, other shopping conundrums

Is it me, or did no one get stampeded at 5:30 in the morning on Black Friday? Did doors get busted? Did merchandise fly out the store at unbelievable prices? Did people finish their Christmas shopping in just one day? Perhaps I didn’t pay enough attention to the news this passed weekend.

Of course, this weekend, I did a lot of driving. Thursday, just to Arlington. Friday to Burleson, then to Eagle Mountain Lake and then to Burleson before going back home. Mucho miles, mi amigos.

TxDOT closing down NB I-35 Thursday night

Texas Department of Transportation has completed one side of the new construction on I-35 in Waxahachie.

In order to safely begin the construction on the other side of the highway, Tx-Dot will change the traffic flow on I-35 northbound, routing traffic onto the newly completed side of the highway. The change in traffic pattern will occur Thursday night beginning at 9 p.m. through 6 a.m. Friday.

Motorists will take exit 401B for US 287 Business (BUS 287) and continue down the frontage road to get back onto the main lanes at the entrance ramp north of US 287.

TSTC, Bombardier announce training partnership

Texas State Technical College and Bombardier announced a training partnership on Tuesday, Dec. 3, that will give over 250 employees classroom training at TSTC and then on-the-job training at Bombardier in Red Oak.

The employees will be trained in groups in a special company lab at the Jim Pitts Industrial Technology Center at 119 North Lowrance Road in Red Oak. After completing the training at TSTC, the group will receive 90 days of on-the-job training in an aviation apprenticeship at the Bombardier facility.
