Autumn Daze slated for Saturday, Oct. 26

Ennis’ 16th Annual Fall Festival, officially known as Autumn Daze, kicks of Saturday morning with a 5K (3.1 mile) dash and a one-mile fun run at 8 a.m. It all takes place on the new North Dallas Street.

The Monster Mash 5k dash follows at 9 a.m. Other than the race, there are other fun-filled activities including pumpkin painting, food and shopping, and a beer garden that will be open and outdoor entertainment. A shiner, Oktoberfest and Corona Premier will be be part of the five beers available.

Angie Juenemann, approaching her fourth year in office as Ennis’ first woman mayor, spoke recently to the Ennis News about the growth of the Bluebonnet City during her term and the plans that are underway for its future.

“I am so proud of the positive direction the city and community are taking,” Juenemann said. “I want to thank everyone for having patience as we continue to build our vision and our dreams for Ennis.

Homeowners battle locked meter boxes

Many towns and cities in Texas, including Ennis, have switched from the manually read water meters to those of the easier digital variety.

Older meters transmit the usage of water for the location either to a vehicle that drives through the city or directly to a monitoring site. The use of these meters allows cities to designate monies usually reserved for the reading of the meters to other areas of need within the city.

It has also caused some residents to find out later they do not have access to the water shutoff valve for their home.

Ten tornadoes wreak $2B in damages

Storm activities across North Texas on Sunday did an estimated $2 billion in insurance losses as ten tornadoes reportedly struck the area. The best news of the day was the lack of loss of life, which was being credited for advances in weather warnings,

One news source reported the cost of the twisters and extreme storms will make it the costliest weather event in North Texas history. It will exceed the 2015 tornadoes that hit the Lake Ray Hubbard are of Rowlett and Garland. Those expenses exceeded $1.2 billion, though there were a few casualties.

Two straight years the Scurry-Rosser at Palmer football game was hard-hit with a deluge of rain that forced the location of the contest to move from a lush natural grass surface to Scurry-Rosser’s quick-draining artificial turf. And for a second consecutive season the Wildcats were hard-hit by the Bulldogs in a 51-21 blowout. It was 39-0 a year ago.

Played in cool temperatures in the mid 40’s not counting horizontal rain and windy conditions, the guests wore all-black and kept their winning ways in the same color.

This Thursday, kids and their parents will hit the streets around sundown to begin their annual trek throughout the city seeking candy from neighbors and friends. While the focus of the holiday remains on the younger trick-or-treater dressed in their Wonder Woman, Star Wars or comic book character costumes, the Halloween of old has gone the way of the 286 computer.

I'll Tell You What

Why are we such suckers for being scared? As much build up as Halloween receives nowadays, it does beg the question why we willingly choose to endure fear and suspense and then to do so and receive pleasure in the process.

The emotions one experiences as a result of fear are usually connected to the perceived threat of danger. Do we stand our ground and fight? Do we hook ‘em and try to save our-self ? Do we wait to decide until we panic and freeze?

Let me quickly say this about that. I do not like scary movies or haunted houses.

Lions tennis reaches regional semi-finals

Eleven wins in a row, including another district championship, came to an end on Thursday morning when No. 2 ranked Frisco Lebanon Trail swept No. 25 Ennis in the Regional Semi-Finals behind a 10-0 verdict.

The Lions ended the fall team tennis season at 11-3. Veteran HC Keith Howard said afterwards the No. 2 team in the state played the part well, taking a handful of doubles matches as well as every singles event.
