EDITORIAL

Most Texans look forward to fall and winter. After a grueling summer of heat, with or without humidity, cooler temperatures and occasional rain is a welcome treat.

September 21 is the Autumnal Equinox and it heralds the official beginning of fall. Along with the cooler temperatures comes football season, high school, college and professional. High School football has been said to be the third largest religion in Texas. Some towns have signs that say, “Last one out, turn out the lights,” since practically the whole town travels to the away games.

In the wake of the beautiful and awe-inspiring coverage of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, I have a horrible confession to make: I don’t remember seeing this historic event on television as it happened, live in 1969. It concerns me deeply: was I painting my fingernails in my lavender bedroom? Was I going around and around the Dairy Queen in a blue Chevrolet to see who was there, and to be seen? Was I using ModPodge on bottles and boxes and mirrors, as the 70s came into focus? I don’t recall.

Four-legged officer joins EISD campus police

Dogs learn much from humans, but they have been known to teach a boy about fidelity, perseverance and to turn around three times before lying down. As a close companion to man, they are said to be the only thing on earth that loves people more than it loves itself.

Ennis ISD recently added man’s best friend to its campus police force in a two-year old Belgian Malinois. The Dutch Shepherd mix is considered a canine officer, and his handler is Matthew Blair.

On Sept. 17 the Ennis Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Covenant Christian Academy. After a successful pilot year, CCA has officially begun this year with expansion. Doubling the number of classrooms and facilities, CCA entered the 2019-20 school year with a new and remodeled Junior High and High School wing. In addition, they have doubled the elementary classrooms. Plus, they are now offering excellent core education classes like Spanish, theater arts, music, art and Bible. Once a month they can be a part of 4-H and culinary arts as well.

A local woman’s Emmy nomination has been the talk of the town, drawing congratulations from friends all over the country. TV production designer Lindsay Lipscomb, daughter of Ennis High counselor Diane Lanicek, said the recognition from her professional peers, friends and family has been a surreal experience.

“Special, the Netflix show that I production-designed was nominated for four Emmys,” Lipscomb explained. “One was for best short form drama/comedy. The other three were nominations for three of the actors in the show.”

Hwy speed limit raised from 55-70

Signs were installed on Monday along Hwy 287 in Ennis raising the posted speed limit from 55 mph

to 70. With construction on 287 from IH-45 to Hwy 34 nearing completion, the north and southbound main lanes have opened and the speed limit has been increased.

Garrett police confiscate card skimmers

Contract workers discovered the skimmers and contacted the police

Credit and debit card skimmers have been a problem for years at self-serve gas stations. The problem was discovered at the Garrett One-Stop Gas Station on Thursday. Contract workers were at the station to service and calibrate the gas pumps when they discovered the skimmers attached to the self-pay device on the pumps. The workers immediately contacted Ellis County dispatch who sent Garrett police officers to the store. Garrett police removed three skimmers from the pumps at the station.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services’ 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation unveiled that more than 90 million United States residents aged 16 or older participated in some sort of wildlife-related activity that year — the most recent year on record. Wildlife recreationists spend nearly $150 billion per year on their activities. With this in mind, those who have hunters, anglers or outdoorsmen on their holiday shopping lists may find that gifts facilitating these specific pursuits can be the ideal fit this holiday season.
