Palmer schools off to a good start

“For the most part it has been a very good start to the year. I have heard from several parents that said their kids are extremely happy to be back in school. Our staff is working so hard teaching face-to-face and virtually. Our district is not large enough to have teachers just handle the virtual students, consequently they are doing both which is difficult to say the least.

Much anticipated, the start of the new school year has gone very well at local campuses, including Ennis, which began on Thursday, Aug. 20. Superintendents report temporary glitches, including internet issues, but they were quickly resolved.

Coaching at Palmer has a strong family appeal, and since the arrival of athletic director and football coach Don Waddle, has seen that sport rise in its winning ways. The Bulldogs had never won a district title until he came to town (they now have two), and the Barkers are favored for another tailwaggin’ season.

Palmer Independent School District has released its approved Back to School Plan (B2S) for the fall. The seven-member Board of Trustees and others in attendance held a meeting on Monday night, which went smoothly except for a few sparks (see wearing masks).

Big 5 hoops warming up with tournaments

Pre-district games continue, not to mention area tournaments for Big 5 girls basketball teams in Eastern Ellis County. Out of the gate, both Italy and Palmer are racking up wins.

New Head Coach Rolandrus Raindle, the new varsity coach at Italy, has the Class 2A Lady Gladiators off to a 6-2 start. A Corsicana H.S. grad, he completed his degree at Prairie View A&M University and got his first whistle and clipboard at his alma mater, Corsicana. This year he was hired by Italy Athletic Director, Craig Horn, and is enjoying a fruitful first month.
